Ride # 6 - The Aspen Loop

Ride # 6 at MitM in August is what we call The Aspen Loop. This ride shakes out as follows:

Leave Copper Mountain Resort the same way you would if you were taking the Independence Pass run. Head up thru Leadville, then continue up and over Independence Pass and down into Aspen. Never mind that the road narrows significantly (barely enough for two MINIs to pass) as you head down into the land of the filthy rich. There is plenty of evidence as you go thru town. Check your ride sheet for interesting and important stops in Aspen. When you have had quite enough, head back west towards Glenwood Springs about 40 miles away. Stop if you like for a nice afternoon bath in our famouns hot springs. Then, jump back on I-70 and go eastbound towards Beaver Creek, Vail and then Copper Mountain again, about 75 miles away.

In Aspen, perhaps a side trip to Woody Creek and the Woody Creek Tavern (home of dec. Gonzo Journalist Hunter S. Thompson). www.aspenchamber.org for more information....

What a great day drive!! Plan to stop for lunch in Aspen or Glenwood down by the river....watch your ride sheets for details and local color.

We drove part of this route this weekend and wow, were the mountains gorgeous. A lot less snow (and no more ice on that lake). Weather was great (mid-70s and sunny), but it still felt a little cool, so be sure to pack a sweater, sweatshirt, or jacket for MitM!

You're right about the jacket, it was 60 degrees with a 20 mph wind in Leadville yesterday at 2pm. Good looking MINI btw.

That's the beauty of this event

There is no specific day or time for any of the rides. We ask that all attendees, when ready to take a ride, queue up at the parking structure and group off / pair off then. The groups can be large or small, but this way you go where you want, when you want, with whom you want.

In the past, other large national events (Dragon, AMVIV, etc) have organized large group rides that leave at the same time - with a lot of pp. We did not want that, we want it more intimate. There are arguments for both, and this is our choice.

If you want to take this ride, we will have a 'posting board' for you to write up in advance. Do it, then others who wish to join can show up at the time you post, and off you go. It will happen on both days, depending on the drivers...

Thanks for asking, see you soon.

I am looking forward to this run. I have lived in Colorado for 15 years and never been to Aspen. Lets take the city by storm, get as many minis as possible at the same time and turn heads!!!!!

I'll second that

Since 1989, I have been to Aspen 3 times. The first was for business, the other two - just driving thru. Shame.

Our event has mapped out 2 rides. One goes from CMR Copper Mtn Resort up thru Leadville, over Independence Pass and into Aspen, then back.

The other goes on thru Aspen, then Carbondale, then to Glenwood (Hot Springs) then back thru Glenwood Canyon (wow!!) then back, shamefully, on the Interstate to CMR.

Take your pick.

Whatever it is, there are others who will want to go your way. Queue up at the parking structure, pair off in groups of three (thanks, Yogi!) and Motor on....
