R56 Elephant like sound when turning off engine
Elephant like sound when turning off engine
Hi everyone
i have a problem with my mini cooper s making an elephant like sound when turning off engine. It comes from somewhere arround clutch on the back side of the engine and must be pressure related since it does not do that if i pull out oil stick or remove oil filler cap. Any ideas what it might be? Allready changed the pressure converter but the problem remains.

My guess would be a bad PCV valve. That would jibe with opening the oil cap making it go away since that would equalize the crankcase pressure.
On the R56 it's part of the valve cover, rear right under that round piece on the valve cover. Use a stethoscope and see if you can localize it to that, but it you've never replaced it it's probably due. It's part of the valve cover so you replace the whole piece.

I actually have two new valve covers (not oe but elring and one other brand and the sound is the same if i switch them). The OE cover is not making sounds but it is cracked and it leaks vacuum. The other covers also don’t make sound if a cap is off or oil stick is pulled out.
also as far as i could listen to sound’s origin it seems to be coming from somewhere arround the rear side of gearbox area. Tried to hold things but couldn’t feel any vibrations or anything

it is a S model. Need any special tools to check crankhouse pressure?
Hmm. Normally my next guess would be the brake booster, but that gets vacuum from the vacuum pump so I can't see how opening the oil cap would make a difference. Though in thinking about it maybe that just boosts the crankcase vacuum if it's connected...
Anyway, worth a shot to see if something's going on there. Try disconnecting the vacuum hose from the booster as a test, see if it makes any difference. You'll likely want to plug the port to the vacuum pump.

Cant upload that video but if its a Moo sound and its near the turbo /transmission side of the engine it could be the Pressure Converter or
vacuum tank.
