I'd be looking to make an offer on these - can you confirm what the tyres are? I can see they're Dunlops, but what?

Sorry for being off topic, but what really is the difference between having rubber or metal valve stems? Like is there any pros/cons of either?

Thank you

Dont quote me on this but I believe metal indicates TPMS...

I think I read tho that our TPMS is mounted to the rim itself...if you try and order rims from tirerack.com it says our car is equipped with TPMS and they will install the device on the new rims before shipping or we can have the ones off our old car professionally transferred...they show a pic and its against the rim...im just guessing tho

The rubber valve stem means you have indirect TPMS. There is no sensor on the wheel. The car senses when a tire is low because it will turn at a different speed than a full tire.

Metal valve stem means you have direct TPMS. There is a sensor mounted under the valve stem that actually reads the pressure and wireless communicates with the unit in the car.

I think they went to direct TPMS sometime in 07. I got my car in late Dec 07. It has direct TPMS.

Is there a reason they put metal stems on the direct TPMS? What would happen if rims were put on with no device in the rim? Would the car just switch to indirect?

If your car has active TPMS, you need to use wheels with the device in the rim (assuming you want TPMS to work).

However, you can put wheels with a TPMS device on a car with indirect setup, because the car just won't communicate with the TPMS but will continue to count rotation speed.

Jahpaul - nice to meet you earlier, sorry I was in a bit of a hurry, but I did get to the game on time. Next time there'll be a pint involved

Gah, I wish it was that easy. If you put on rims with no device (like I did recently - installed a set of Rota RB's and didn't want to go through the trouble at the time of moving over the sensors from my OEM wheels) you get a chime on start-up and the tire pressure warning light stays illuminated. Although MINI's with the new TPMS system obviously have ABS, the software to constantly read rotational speed is no longer linked to tire pressure monitoring.

The reason the valve stems are now metal is that they have an actual sensor in them which constantly reads each tire's PSI. The older (FTM) system detected a flat tire via monitoring the rotational difference (via ABS) on each tire. It in no way has the ability to read actual tire pressure. Even so, obviously a tire with less pressure in it will rotate slower than the others, so it's fairly easy for the software to pick up on this change.

Apparently the switch (starting around build week 32 last year) was made because of a government mandate. The jury still seems to be out, however, on which system is more effective. One would think the new system would clearly be better, but the MINI's sensors only have the ability to read tire PSI to a certain degree of accuracy. Hence us not being able to see the PSI of each tire in real time, like in other cars or even aftermarket systems. Because of this, there have been reports of the older system catching a flat before the newer one does. Doubt this time difference is signficant though.

One cool advantage of the new system (assuming you have the OEM nav system) is its ability to tell you which of the tires is low. Opposed to the older system which would alert you to the fact that a tire(s) is low, but not which one(s) in particular. Just makes putting on aftermarket wheels a royal pain though.
