I would wait. The merger between Sirius and XM was approved yesterday, and while that is cool, it means that to get BOTH sets of channels you would have to get a new (not yet available) radio that gets them both. Right now you can only get one or the other with what's available.
If you're cool with that, then cool...but the OEM Sirius set-up is not cheap (I think my parts were between $350-400, and I self-installed) and I would hate for someone to fork out a lot of cash for a radio that's going to be outdated and has a very slim possibility of not working at all in a year's time.

About the merger...
Not positive... but wasn't the merger approved by the justice department?
I believe it still has to clear the FCC, and I would think that would take
longer. (Of course, maybe it's easier to bribe the FCC than the Justice
folks <g>... that would speed things up.)
(Now, if they would just put the International Olympic Committee in charge,
it'd go thru tomorrow

I got my Sirius from Classic MINI-about $220 with their discount plus about 60 for the antenna. You only need the base; the whip from your old antenna works fine. I self installed in about and hour and a half-not knowing anything. There's a full description of the install I wrote up about two years ago somewhere on this site. To me, the real advantage is that I can use the steering wheel radio controls to change the Sirius channels. BIG PLUS! On the other hand, if a new radio might be required after the Sirius/XM merger, then I'd wait. You say you have the portable Sirius radio now, so you won't die on the upcoming trip. Just close your eyes and the music will sound the same. Oh, no driving with eyes closed. Bad Idea. Good luck.

Just incase your still looking.. I am in the process of removing my factory sirius, and installing aftermarket..
If anyone knows how to merge the factory antenna to the aftermarket brain, help would be appreciated.
