Keep the Riffraff out of MTTS
We stayed about 5 min from the host hotel for MTTS 2010 in Atlanta for less than half of the host hotel. I was worried we would miss stuff but from what I heard, no events were scheduled there and no one knew who was MINI and who wasnt. Based on our visit to the hotel, unless you already knew someone staying there, you would have never known that anyone else was in town.

Exactly. There never has been any MTTS activities at the host hotels during MTTS 2006, 2008 or 2010. I did stay at the host hotel for MTTS 2010 in Denver, but again, all events were at other locations.
I actually cruised over to this forum looking to see if anyone would possibly be interested in splitting up the cost of a room, as that is the largest expense budgeted into my plan. Any interest?
LOL! No wonder you were complaining about the rates at the host hotels!

The most luxurious hotel I have stayed in was a Sofietel in Vienna. It had an excellent buffet, TV in the bathroom, lots of perqs. The $250 per night rate was ludicrous from my point of view, but the room was provided at no cost by our airline, so I didn't argue.
For some cities we're staying at the host hotels. For others, we'll find other accommodations. If this year is anything like MTTS 2010, there's nothing significant happening at the hotels anyway. Morning meetup locations are always somewhere else.
