I'm thinking about doing the same... on stock suspension it's perfectly fine... on anything lower than H-Sports I think it's asking for rubbing... I'm dropping my car on H-Sports this week and based on the tire size calculator you linked in another thread will be making my decision on tire size. However, i'm doing some calculations now based on my s-lites with 205/40 and stock suspension and I don't think there should be a problem with rubbing. If there is it'll be minimal and you could simply trim the wheel liner if necessary... I guess ultimately it depends on the offset of the wheels though... My future wheels will have a ET43 offset, how is that compared to stock?

EDIT: the S-Lites have an ET50 offset.. So that means that my 18s will be 7mm further out than the S-Lites... However i should still have like 1/4" of clearance front and rear from tire to fender... It'll probably rub under load but the 40 profile will fit the wheel gap better, I'm prepared to trim the wheel liner if need be. What offset is the wheel you want/have?

I believe stock offset is 45mm.

with any type of lowering over 1" you are asking trouble. What offset? you might get away with some dremmelling, slight possibility tho

For me this would be on JCW suspension (1/2" drop) and 42mm offset.

I guess I like exclusive stuff.

My original question was really about the wisdomw of running a 215 on a 7" rim. I'm assuming you don't lose much lateral response on a 40 series, but maybe...

You will not have a problem. The lateral stability will not be effected since the profile has been lowered. That said, you could take more advantage of the "40" profile with a strech - wider wheel. A big strech, like an an 8.5 , looks mean but defeats the radial design, bias ply works great. Bottom line a 215 x 40 will work just fine on a 7" rim. I'm planning to do the same the end of the week
