Tire Dilema

I will be getting rid of my all season runflats for either Toyo TR1 or Goodyr GS-D3.
My local tire shop says they can swap out the summer tires for my runflats anytime I want for $90 flat rate, for as long as I own the summer tires I bought there.

Now, do I do that? Or get a 2nd set of Xlites and swap wheel/tire combo instead of just the tires?

Or do I also sell the runflats and just get real winter tires for the winter.
And with this option I could either tire swap or get 2nd set of rims.

And just to confirm, my local tire shop, which is very high end(been on unique whips) will do this service of swapping tires w/ no problems under their full tire maintainance program for $90.

Which am I to do?

If your runflats are shot, and you can swap out your runflats for Goodyear F1's for ninety bucks a pop, that's a no brainer. You can still get a cheap set of winter rims/tires.

Monday, the F1's are going on special--I know this because I just bought a set of R90's, and was going to have F1's put on them (215/45/17) yesterday, but the store manager told me about the special, and let me know if I waited until Monday, I'd get an extra 80 bucks off. Something to consider.

cct1, I don't think you understood me. I'd have to pay for the summer tires.
What the $90 gets me is the labor to take off the summers, to put back on the winters in fall and vice/verse in the spring... every year. This way I dont need a 2nd set of wheels.

But thanks for the tip on the F1s. Where did you hear about this special?

I think this is the promotion... a cash card.
And its $80 when you get the credit card.

If you plan on using your runflats for winter use I'd buy another set of rims for your summer tires. Mounting & dismounting tires over & over is very hard on the tires. Be kind to your tires & buy some rims.

Ah, sorry I misunderstood. I agree with Crashton above--that's exactly what I'm doing. I'm using the R90's/F1's in the summer, and S-lites/all season runflats in the winter. I have the luxury of having an SUV for really bad weather, so I can get by with the S-lites for winter, otherwise I'd get a smaller set of rims with winter tires for winter.

And I think that's the promotion in the above link--the dealer is just going to credit it for me; I don't have to get the credit card or anything. Really wanted to have them put on Friday, but 80 bucks is 80 bucks, so I'll do it tomorrow.

Thanks for the link... I'm watching other ebay's as well.
$300 for wheels alone is steep, when I could get wheels and tires for 400.
Maybe sell the tires... any takers?

Not to steal your thread, but I have decided to sell my winter tires/rims that I ran on my MCS as I am going to a big brake kit and really did not drive the car in the winter.

I have take off holeys with Happapolita snows. Let me know if you are interested as I would probably do a killer deal to get them out of my garage. I dount they have a 1000 miles on them.

I know what you mean. I am sneaking a quaife by her, but I am not sure how I can get the BBK by her... she knows and understands cars.

I'd recommending getting a 2nd set of wheels and just swap your wheel/tire combination back and forth. You can do that in about 10-20 minutes yourself for free rather than paying someone $90 (which is actually pretty steep) twice a year to swap your tires. My local tire shop (a large chain) charges most people $50-55 to mount tires on wheels and rebalance them, but only charges me $20-25 because I give them so much business. I don't swap tires back and forth though, I have four sets of wheels (so far) for mine. At $90 2x a year, you'll pay for a new set of take-off wheels in 2 years or less.

Its $90 as long as its the tires i bought from them, for the life of the tire.
So that is 2x / yr for 5yrs. (figure i'll get 25k from the tires and only put 5k/yr on them)
I still think i'd go the 2nd wheel route.

Ah, that's a little different. I think you're making the right choice going with the 2nd set of wheels though, even with the cost difference. You still have the bother of sitting at the tire store twice a year getting the tires swapped, the added stress to the tires of getting mounted and dismounted, and four wheels and tires store in the same amount of space as four tires. Good luck.

Get a second set of wheels for the winter tires, you won't regret it.
You can swap out the wheels yourself in your driveway in 30 minutes....my 2 cents.

does anyone have a set of perf all-seasons that you're happy w/ cornering on dry, as well as in a decent amount of snow? would be nice to not have to bother w/ the money or hassle of changing tires/wheels (although chg'ing wheels is pretty easy).

Just bought my 2nd set of wheels and ordered the Toyo T1Rs.
Should all be installed by end of next week.

Thanks for all the help.

OK... so i got my rims and dropped them off at STS to have the T1Rs put on.
Manager mentions i may want to think about getting the tire protection program @ $12/tire.
It includes... free balancing, free rotations for the life of the tire and free replacement for the 1st year for anything like blowouts or whatever.
I ask "free rotations huh? Will you swap out my winter/summer tires/rims for the life of the toyos?" Answer:"Yes."
So for $50 they will swap out my rims as long as my toyos are there. Which should be 4-5yrs, since i'll do 6000mi/yr on them.
I was going to buy a jack($30) and a torque wrench($50-100). So that would be a minimum of $80 and I'd have to do it myself... or just drive my wheels to STS during lunch twice a year and they do it for me.
STS is 6 minutes from my office.

So what do you think?
