Has anyone painted the tire letters white? I was thinking of doing this to my tires that are on black roto subzeros. Any thoughts? What did you use? I know they make tire lettering pens just for this.

Way back in the 70's I used a paint stick. They are available at hardware stores, lumber yards and masonary supplys. Available in white, yellow, red, blue and black. If you apply tire dressing the sticks will not work.

 

How long would something like this last? I wanted to add some contrasting to the all black setup.

Totally agree, that would look great with those calipers.

Nice car with the white lettering, I was having a hard time picturing the effect.

 

What did you use to color in the lettering?

 

Check out the Duplicolor site for some tire paint products. Haven't used them, but if they perform like their other products it should be some good stuff !

 

Thanks, I will have to check it out. I will go hunting around tomorrow to see what is in the stores. It will give me something to do and be ready for the summer wheels!

I used a platinum white gauche paint. It water based. Lasts about 2 months then needs to be touched up.

If there was a better more permanenent paint I would use it.

Try the water based paints you get in the hobby stores on one side.

I wish GoodYEar made these white letter.

red would be sweet with the black car and a red pinstripe on the side of the car ala the batmobile

It is a nice little touch! I think it would look good with an all black mini with white lettering on the wheels to set some contrast!

How long did it take you to paint the lettering? What did you do to clean the rubber before applying?

About 10 minutes a wheel. Depends on your skills with a fine paintbrush. At first I was slow, but doing it a few times makes you better. Have a wet rag ready to wipe if you go out of the lines.

I didn't do my new tires yet. Once you do them you have to keep doing them or wirebrush clean the letters out.(Bronze brush)

The car just look tough when you do it, kind of like a Hot Wheel (I was a kid in the 70's)

ooops...I just washed the wheels with car wash.(soap and water)

I've got the paint pens sitting in my drawers. I decided against doing it after the paint pens came in. Someone can have the paint pens if they want them.

 

some tire manufacturer is selling pens in white and red specifically to paint tire letter. i frogot which one but I saw an ad in a recent issue of sport compact car

 

I tried whitewall paint (expensive!) but it would start to yellow and the edges started to lift...after starting over (removing all the paint...b!tch) twice, I gave up If only I knew how the tire manufacturer's did it...

It looked awesome with black wheels...expecially when rotating



Twenty years ago, I used a home made stencil and spray paint on my Rex and it looked sweet but rough...didn't bother me as I rarely washed it anyway

These are made for tires, and don't fade... I have seem the outcome, and they look really good. I have some on order myself. I tried the 'grease pen' sort of thing from JCWhiteny, and regretted it the moment I was done. It looked good from 20ft away, but up close it just looked bad.

HEHE same thing I posted about 4 months ago.

I have seen it 3 weeks after application and it still looked good. Need to be careful when doing it. Not real easy to clean up a mistake.
