deleting pad wear sensor...

Hi All,

My pad wear sensor has tripped (both front and rear) and I have since installed some EBC greenstuffs. My question is how do I get rid of the pad sensor warning? I don't really want to buy a new sensor and I am assuming that modding the sensor should be an easy fix (it was on my audi S4, just clip the sensor and splice the wires).

With the Mini I have cut the wires and spliced them but the light remains. I figured that perhaps the Mini looks for an open circuit so I unspliced the wires but the light still remained on. I asked the Mini dealship and they replied that the ECU looks for an open circuit and that perhaps the light remained on after cutting the wire due to it holding the fault code in memory. The dealer tried to reset the ECU with no luck. I'm lost and I need help. I know non OEM pads are being used by others and I know it shouldn't be this hard... Please help!

It is my understanding that the pad sensors need to be replaced after the warning light is illuminated. There is no other way around it. I think they're about $20 each (you need a front sensor and a back sensor)

I zip-tied my pad-wear sensor under the car while installing my Wilwoods, and the light has never come on.

Anyone else that has had the dash warning light come on.
My light was on so I replaced the front pads. While removing the sensor the little plastic wings on the back snaped off so it won't stay in place.
I zip tied it back out of the way. Brake pad warning light still actived on dash after replacing front pads. I scanned with a PEAK scanner, no codes.
Whats up with this???

If I remember correctly, you have to hold the reset button in the center console to reset the light....you know the one for the "low tire pressure."

Mine was on after I changed my rotors and pads and that did the trick for me. My wear sensors are just zip-tied out of the way.

Sorry, I know it's probably obvious, where can we find this write up?

Great idea! While I don't mind looking at the warning light, I would prefer it just go away. Thanks. $32 for both sensors, FYI

I just sent an inquiry to Classic Auto Campus for those parts.

Mine tripped but my pads appear far too thick to need replacing. How do you know which one has actually activated the light?

Only 2 pads wear the sensor: left front and right rear. Of those, only 1 pad on each of those calipers is monitored. I think it's the outboard pad on each, but I haven't looked at it in quite a while.

Defeating Brake Pad Wear Sensor Warning Light

If your warning light is on then the sensor has been worn through and circuit "opened" (as someone else mentioned). If you cut the sensor wire (say 4" back from the caliper) and slit the sheath open, there are 2 single conductor wires inside. Shave some insulation off them and twist the ends together (the part of the wire leading into the body, not the part left attached to the caliper!). Tape it up and you're done. This will close the circuit and turn the warning light off. Tried and tested - it works!
