Thanks to Minihune I learned about ricer yesterday. Not sure how to distinguish ricer from bling though. Is one kitsch and the other camp?

I'd say (and this is coming from a life long suburbanite ) that anything that is chromed to the hilt and way oversized would be called 'bling'. The point is to somehow draw the attention of people who are easily distracated by shiney objects. Examples are larger than life wheels (see above)

'Rice' is anyting added to a car to give the appearance of performance without actually adding anything beneficial to performance....ie, fart can mufflers

Please consults www.laughatrice.com for specific examples.

Epithets Explained

More specifically, "ricer" is a gag on Asian cars. The theory being that they all eat rice, so their cars are rice-powered. Sort of like an Italian superbike is a "pasta rocket".

But a ricer is a modified Asian car, and it doesn't matter whether its a Korean, Japanese, Chinese, or whatever.
It's usually not considered polite, though, to say to a Mitsubishi owner, "Nice rice-burner!"

Thanks, both, for the information. I appreciate erik99's tactful explanation. I am grateful, but afraid ahamos may have revealed an underlying "logic". Ricers and pasta rockets. NAM expands one's lexicon of the un-PC.

those are TIS wheels that are made by American Racing. Chrome quality is crap. We called them Twenty Inches of Sh^t..

Someone will buy them with 225/30/20 sould be fun to hear if the will rub. 20x7.5 is going to be very popular this year, even have seen some tuner rims from Team Dynamics coming in that size.. Is 20" rice ?

I am known to love plenty of shiny things, but the BLINGY rims scare me, tee hee! I love the OEM ones for our MINIs.

The Manager's demo at Brecht Mini in San Diego has 20" wheels with narrow spokes (I know nothing about this subject, so I can't begin to guess what they were). They looked like wagon wheels! Blech!

On the subject of ricers...http://ricecop.com/

It's a shame we can't seed the market with some delightful epithet of our own making for the MINI. "Lime-burner" just doesn't have that same zing to it.

I have to agree about the 20" wheels. The MINI looks like it has big wheels on it when you have 16" wheels. I know folks who have said the MINI looks ike a roller-skate with 18"s. 20" is just too big, and getting tires to fit under there would require such a low profile that you'd bend the rims on the first pot-hole.

At least! Can you imagine the momentum these wheels build up at speed? They better come with a drag race style parachute.

I just don't know what to say about these

Yes, I don't think you'll ever see these on a 5 series...unless it is 25 years old.

You can't buy class, but it sure is fun to watch people try.

I've always heard chromed wheels = heavy and so showing up with chrome wheels might raise an eyebrow automatically among the performance minded. I have the normal touches of chrome on my Cooper (grill, badges, etc) which looks nice w/ IB. I did add a chrome John Cooper signature to the boot which is kinda finishes off the whole chrome thing for me.

I admit, I honestly don't know where people are coming from with all the bling bling...chrome or otherwise!!!

What I really enjoy about those rims is that they probably cost the face value of the bills on them. I count 6 $100 bills on that wheel, and at 20", I could believe it selling for $600.

As far as chrome being heavy: it's also brittle, and the chroming process (from what I've heard) heats the wheels enough to make the alloy more brittle. I guess if you just want a show-car, chrome wheels are great.

The weight difference really doesn't come into play until you're counting hundredths of seconds. I know my 22.5lb wheel/tire combo didn't do anything significant to improve my dyno results (but, in the right forum, the SSR's are bling).
