225/45/17 Questions

edited: Just bought a set of OZ Superleggras on Ebay

Hello,

I'll be picking up my '05 MCS on March 25th and will be fitting 17"x7" OZ Superleggras (37mm offset) I was going to order my tires from the TireRack but can't figure out what size to go for. I ran Yok ES100s in 225/45/17s on my last MCS w/stock suspension but this time around I'll be upgrading to a set of H-Sport springs. Will the same tire size work ok? I think I'll run the ES100s again as they are fairly inexpensive for the street. I take all my aggression out on the track with my 225/50/15 R Compounds so I don't need the ultimate sticky street tire. What do you all think? I'm just worried about the rubbing issue. i think I may have to shave my rear fenders anyway once I lower the suspension to accommodate my R Compounds. Also anyone run the Yokohama AVS Sports? Any help is appreciated.

thanks

Amit

If you're running on the street only don't worry about going for the extra meat and possibly running into rubbing issues. I'd say a 205/45 or 215/45 17 would be better, and also the 225/45 would make your speedo read slow.

AVS Sports are a very nice tire. Considerably above the ES100 on the performance ladder. It used to be our track street-tire of choice before they discontinued the 15".

Thanks for the input everyone. I think i'll go with the 215/45/17. I'm going to have some rubbing so i'll shave the fender liners. I'm so pumped about my MINI that I decided to photoshop the wheels onto the car and gave it a H-Sport drop. What do you think?

Especially with only a 37mm offset.

Not so sure about this. Even if it did, it would be a good thing ...

i run the avs es 100 225 45 17's on the street and some dunlop R compound on the track that are also 225 45 17 unshaved. i would stray away from both. the street tires rub with more than two people in the car. on the way to the track with all my stuff in the car the dunlops rub like crazy. on the track at VIR there are a few places that they rub also. i use ugly amounts of camber in the rear to minimize this but have just learned to deal with it.

That photochop looks pretty darn good! for a second that bonnet
looked like mine?!

Since you're already planning to dremel the fenders using the Alex-technique,
you'll be fine running the 215/45/17's I think.

Thanks kenchan, your MINI is one of my favorites, perfect in my eyes. Alex is suggested the 215/45/17s as well, now I just need to decide which tire to go for

Do you have a link to the Alex fender trim technique?

thanks

Amit

225 will rub. I have run 225 wide race tires with a decent ammount of rub, even with spacers.

My own personal opinion is to stay away from the AVS es100's they went from new to bald in under 10K miles... Mabye I need to get my foot off the gas, but most of the time I get 20K out of tires....

225/45/17 is totally do able with fender work, and running spacers, makes the rubbing worse, its an issue just inside your rear wheel wells, a retangular bumper braket. 2 o'clock position of driver rear gets you there.

The 225 was actually rubbing on the rear trailing arm... that is why the spacer was needed.

my 225's only rub in the rear. i use heavy rear camber to minimize it. it still rubs some just inside the fender well between 1 o'clock to 2:30. it is unseen outside but visible if you remove the wheel. i wore down my yoko's a good bit on the track so they don't rub now. my new dedicated track tires still have lots of tread and rub lots on the track and on the trip to and from the track.

Just curious, how about 225/40-17 on ET42 wheel? Will it rub with stock suspension? The diameter of the wheel is pretty much the same, only 0.18in. smaller.

Seems not too many choice of that type, only one found, from Nitto.

Thanks for everyone's input, I think I'll be going for a 215/45/17, this seems pretty safe. I may have to trim my fenders a bit. My R compounds are pretty wide and tall at 225/50/15. I used to get a little bit of rubbing under load on my old car w/stock suspension, so I figure with the H-Sports making the car sit lower I'll have more of a problem. What are recommendations for camber adjustments? I understand the concept of how camber adjustments help but have no clue as to what would suit me for track and street driving with my two wheel sizes. I track my car about 8 times a year and it is my daily driver, in the winter i even put on my 15" snows. Here are my tire/wheel size, any camber help would be appreciated along with product recommendations:

Street:
OZ Superleggras 17"x7" 37mm offset on 215/45/17

Track:
OZ Superleggras 15"x7" 37mm offset on 225/50/15 R compounds

Snow:
MINI 7-hole 15"x5.5" 45mm offset on 195/55/15

thanks

Amit

Sorry to bring up this old thread but I figure it's better than someone telling me to do a search. Anyways can you please go into detail about how much fender work needs to be done. Are you talking about on stock suspension because a will want to be lowering it about an inch. Would the fender work be something that steve from steve's auto clinic could do? Thanks.

The reason I ask is because I'm getting the falken azenis rt-615's but they don't make a 215/45/17. I don't want to get a 205 and I also don't want a 40 sidewall so the next best size they have available is 225/45/17 .

Searching for 225/40-17 at tirerack.com or edgeracing.com brings up zero tires in this size. The Nitto 555 in 225/40-17 fits rims 7.5-9" wide and has outer tire diameter of 24.06". Tire width is about 9". Given a stock suspension it will probably fit ok.

For 225/40-16
Fits rims 7.5-9" wide and outer tire diameter is 23.2" (small for a MINI)
and For 225/40-18
Fits rims 7.5-9" wide and outer tire diameter is 25.1" (large for a MINI)

For 225/45-17
Fits rims 7 to 8.5" wide and outer tire diameter is 25"
