12 Clubman right rear caliper seized

Ok guys my boyfriend has a 2012 Clubman basic model. It has 101k on it and he was driving home tonight when the tire locked and all his lights came on. I.e. brake, abs, traction control .the tire won't turn at all. His said it has been dragging after pressing the brakes for a month now...(I know that's not good but it's not my car) now it's seized. The car is sitting in a parking lot. What I'm needing to know is after changing the caliper, pad and possibly rotors. Is there any additional damage I need to look for and what are some tips to help me along this repair .

The calipers are "floating", they slide side to side to equalize the pressure between the fixed side and the piston. The caliper may be fine and just need to have the caliper bushings cleaned and lubricated, and possibly the piston seal and dustboot replaced. A simple rebuild that any competent shop can do. Brake pads and rotor of course will need to be inspected and replaced as necessary.

Rear calipers also you need to check the emergency brake mechanism.

Awesome as for all the warning lights should there be major concern for that. Literally all braking system lights came on

Assuming it is just the stuck caliper, once the caliper has been fixed then the error codes will need to be reset, that will require a code reader that can handle the MINI specific modules and codes. So find an independent MINI shop if you don't want to go to the dealer.

there may be other issues, impossible to diagnose with complete confidence based just on the written description and without having seen the car. But most likely it is the caliper is stuck, especially if the caliper slides have never been cleaned and lubricated when the brake pads were changed. Where are you located? If you are somewhere with snow and salted roads then corrosion can contribute to this problem.

Ok thank you. We are in Florida the car spent it's first years of life in St Pete so I'm sure the sea salt is the main culprit as he has only had the car a year. I'm going to be taking the caliper off today and seeing if I can find a place to rebuild it as none of the local shops have one in stock .

abs errors "usually" self clear when the module sees all the wheels are rotating properly

If the caliper was stuck on the rotor for the last month, I would at least plan on replacing all the rubber bits, as they have likely been cooked from brake heat. Might be a good idea to have a plan for the wheel bearings, too, since they were likely overheated as well.

Thank you guys for the info. I got a chance to look at it and the pad closest to the Piston is completely gone not even a trace of it. The Piston is also bent so it won't retract so I'm definitely going to have to replace the rotor pads and caliper. The brake wear sensor broke of in the process also but that is at the bottom of my list of concerns .I've talked to my boyfriend about taking better care of his cars as he isn't great at it at all. Any suggestions on how to remove the rotor with the caliper stuck on? With the Piston bent it will not retract and I can't free it from the rotor

How do you know that the caliper piston is bent?

MINI's brake caliper pistons cannot be retracted by just pushing them in with a clamp, they need to be rotated as they are retracted.

Harbor freight has a modestly priced tool kit for just this purpose.
