F56 Cooper S Maximum Tire / Wheel Width

Hello All!

I have been digging around the internet all day trying to find the answer to what i thought would be a simple question.

What is the widest wheel/tire combination you can fit on a STOCK F56 Cooper S without going crazy on the offset? SCCA solo allows for 7mm +/- stock which is 54. So ideally ET48 would be good.

What do you guys have? Please list Wheel model and size as well as tire specifications.

Thank you!
Adam

Depends on what sort of fitment you want, near OEM or flush and with what suspension? OEM vs dropped (less clearance).

Other thing is what you mentioned- if for SCCA autocross in Street classes then you need to watch your offset. If so then yes, et48 is OK.

7.5" width is easy, 8" is possible. Wide tires mean less clearance on a wider than OEM wheel and even less clearance if suspension is dropped.

What are you trying to do with a wider than OEM tire and wheel? For street use, for looks, for autocross?

Wider is not always so good, usually means a heavier or more costly wheel than 7", less wheel selection in a given diameter, wide tire usually costs more and weighs more, has more rolling resistance and lowers mpg for daily driving.

Thank you for your reply!

Yea, i have read through both of those threads. Most people posting have an R56 which has a lot more clearance when it comes to the wheels/tires.

I am looking for AutoX primarily. As i said, looks dont really matter to me.

I honestly don't think a 7.5" wheel will clear with a 48-52mm offset. There just isn't enough space. From what i have said the R56 could get away with it.

From what i can tell from rough measurements and a little math is that i only have 7-10 mm of space between the OEM 195's on a 6.5" rim and the strut (this seems to be the only tight spot). Moving to my proposed build (16x7 ET48 and 205/50R16 tires) they will sit 7.4mm closer to the strut.

I am afraid to order the wheel/tire combination without knowing if anybody has tried it yet :(... returning tires/wheels to TireRack would be a very expensive endeavor.

What class?

It matters (preaching to the wise here I am sure).

Cheers,

D Street. So i am basically wanting to "downsize" from a 17x7 rim to 16x7 and put 205/50's on them. As i said, stock suspension/ride height.

I cant find a decent 17" wheel that is light and has the right offset. Plus rubber is more expensive.

Man 205 seems narrow for that heavy of a car, but I would think with a sticky tire like that and a bit wider it will be quite a bit better regardless.

I was hoping to go wider, but i really think a 7" wide wheel with a 205 is going to be the limit without a huge offset/spacers.

My personal solution is in my signature - and works well.

"Sparco Asieta Garo 16x7 with 205/45-16 Bridgestone RE-71R"

Check the Gollum III thread for the reasoning and results.

Cheers,

Charlie

You officially have the widest tires on an F56 on the internet. Your setup is really close to what i am trying to do. How much clearance do you have between the tire and the strut?

Thanks!

Ok, I did it, 16x7 ET48 with Rival S 215/45R16. They fit about the same as OEM, speedo is about 5% faster now that the speedo reads (3%faster compared to how it was before the tires). It sticks very well and acts like a completely different car! Very happy with my decision. Now... for autoX!

I just ordered a set of Dunlop Dirrezza ZII Starspecs size 215/40 R17 to fit on my stock F56 Cooper (Justa) 17x7 wheels. Fingers crossed for a good fit. I'll update when they are installed.

OK. On the stock Cosmos wheels (17x7 ET 54), the 215/40 R17 Dirrezza ZII Starspecs are a VERY tight fit. On the front, the wheel spins freely. Clearance is about 1/8". I wouldn't recommend going any taller on the sidewall.

Nope. Stock wheels without spacers. I would add a picture of the wheels but don't know how to do it on my phone.

I have stock 17". I want 215 all the way around. How is your setup? Any rubbing now that you've been running a while? I wanna go with bridegstone potenzas- I had pole positions on my 750 and that thing hugged the road.

I ran with the Starspecs for about 6,000 miles. 1 track day, 6 autocrosses and the rest in daily driver mode. No rubbing ever. The tightest clearances are between tire and strut at the rear with standard suspension. If a stack of Bridgestones is the same height as a stack of Starspecs, you should be just fine.

i got to tire rack this morning... i intended on bridgestones.. but apparently they don't make em in the size i need :'(... looks like dem Dunlops be the way to go. I had Dunlops for my bike and they worked real well.

Anyone put spacers on their car? I dont want to buy new wheels. What is the widest on the front in regards to rubbing at full turn? Wondering if 225's all around with 5mm-10mm spacers all around

I am a daily driver who takes on/off ramps like they're a race track. And the occasional mountain road. Y'all should see my front left rubber... worn on the outside. need to rotate it with the rear lmao

I have a 2015 Mini Cooper (F55) and I’m running BC coil overs with Niche 18x8 +42 (square setup) with 205/40/18 while using 12mm spacers in the rear and 10mm spacers up front.
