Wheel Opinions - Yea or Nay?

Costco's got another deal on wheels. $150 off.

Total for all 4: $489.96

Do it? Will be going on a R53 Electric Blue MCS.

Not a fan of that universal bolt pattern.

I think they are nice! Not sure if universal bolt would bother me or not

Or, would these OEM R90s be better?

i like the look of the first one better. But having the OEM bolt pattern on the second would, for me, be preferred. Where can you purchase the second wheel? I would be interested if they have it for a CMS4.

They're on sale at ecstuning.com actually. Not as cheap as the first wheel, but still a pretty decent deal I think.

I like both, and see drawbacks to both.

The Costco option is dual bolt pattern and more "universal" in look, and would likely require hubcentric rings for mounting but they do look good.

The Mini OEM option will not require rings, but is likely heavier, and with all the nooks and crannies would be a PITA to keep clean. They are also quite a bit more expensive.

I don't mind the style itself (its a BBS rep of sorts) but I'd probably stay away from any wheel sold at costco. Cheap aftermarket wheels are cast (not very strong) and usually very heavy.

yea I'd stray from no name brands, there are higher quality cast, you don't have to limit to just forged wheels.

Of course. I'm by no means saying only get forged wheels as most of us (myself included) don't want to spend 2k on wheels. If you're going to go cast, at least get something known like Enkei or OZ is what I'm getting at. Both of those brands use a cast and spinning method that is somewhere between a cast and forged wheels in terms of strength.

Right, just trying to make it clear. I just bought a set of Konig feathers after a lot of researching I decided against the nice looking cheap reps with no name brands.

Your MINI will reward you with more performance if you go with a lighter wheel.

90's are like 20lbs right? How much lighter can you go and still keep affordable?
What is weight of challenge rims?

I'm on a tight budget, so high dollar wheels are out of the question.

If I had the money I would have choose the r90s over a lighter wheel, I really like the way they look.

This is what should be used to decide what wheel to get.

If you want light and strong, then either the Enkie RPF1 or PF01 would be good choices.
They are both stronger than traditional cast wheels, as is the OZ Alleggerita HLT which is a little pricier,
and all the true forged wheels for the MINI that I know of are 2 - 3 x as much as these are
(from Volk, BBS, etc.).

How about waiting until you don't have a tight budget?

Do it once, do it right. It will save you a lot of money in the long run.

Im not saying you should wait until you can afford $600+ wheels. There are plenty of wheels out there that are light and strong and come with a reasonable price tag.
Enkei RPF1s and TeamDynamics Pro Race 1.2/1.1 are both great options.

Lol, I don't think I'll ever NOT be on a tight budget...as far as my car is concerned that is. Knowing my luck, I would splurge and buy some expensive wheels, and f* them up the next day.

So does having a lighter wheel equate to a more nimble "feel"?

Yes, particularly in acceleration and braking.
