Need new brakes on the rear, ok to run red stuff?

Hi,

I need new rear brakes in 3k miles on my 2007 MCS but my fronts are not due for another 35k. As far as I know, I have stock pads at all 4 corners (based on the brake dust). Is it ok to run Red Stuff pads on the rear only or will I have a problem leaving the stock pads on the front with those on the rear?

Thanks,
Chuck

Yes you can, your rear wheels will just be cleaner. I would recommend the Red stuff 100% for your car.

EBC does not recommend that arrangement:
http://www.ebcbrakes.com/automotive/...ds/index.shtml

See the bottom of the page.

More than likely you will mess up the front to rear brake balance and that could be a major problem if the rears lock up before the fronts (even with ABS).

I have OEM front and EBC red in the rear and have gotten on the brakes to where I felt ABS work and have had no issues or felt like I was not in control. Can't wait for the EBC redstuff on the fronts when it is time.

I'm good with EBC redstuff however, when I changed mine out I
also replaced the rotors with Zimmerman's. Great combo.

but if this is outside your budget see the "Can use" table below:

Table states it will be fine

I have been running Reds on my OEM rotors both front and rears. Very rotor friendly, stil have original rotors after 78k miles. Due for some new ones this track season.

I replaced front and back on my '05 with EBC reds at the same time, really like them. However, the wife's '09 Clubman front brakes were replaced while it had MINI free service, so it only needed rears. I was advised not to put reds on the back, but to put greens so the breaking balance would be better (I'll put reds on front and back next time around).

I think that if you recheck the table it says:

On Front: Original
OK to fit or have on rear: Ultimax only

I don't see where it say that RedStuff on the rear is OK with OEM on the front.

Just reading what EBC says...

+1

Weather or not the chart says it, I run them. I think they just want to sell more parts and not have liability issues.

I also think as long as you aren't tracking your car and running it normal you should be ok. Most of the braking is at the front anyway.

which brings us to another question

why are your rears gone but the fronts have 35,000 to go?

I'd recommend a visual check of all 4 corners

If it was like my case, fronts were done under maintenance at 34k miles but the rears were just over spec at 36k miles so I replaced them myself at 38k miles.

I am one of the those that no matter what changes all 4 at the smae time. Yeah I spend a little more but I just want the comfort of knowing that I won't need brakes again for awhile instead of one set now and another in a couple thousand miles.

Which is a perfectly valid reply . . . but those "free" front pads might be less than desirable (dust)

I put EBC f&b on my 07 about 500 miles in . . .

Thought you might Way in on my post

Experience is good in making a choice.

But I feel someone should make a decision on the available information...this is just another piece of information.

Personally, I would change out all 4 wheels. Front rotors are probably still good, so it would be just the cost of the new pads. That way there is no question.

I'm in the same boat as others with the rears due in the next 700 miles. The OBC says the fronts have 22,000 miles.

I'm liking the idea of swapping to red stuff front and back but keeping the front OEM rotors this time. I plan to switch from OEM to Zimmerman rotors all around, eventually.

How long will the front OEM rotors last with the red stuff pads? Should I just measure rotor thickness every 4 - 6 months?
