Tpms newbie question
Tpms newbie question
I just had my 2011 MCS and want to change my stock tires with after market. I want to know if I dont put a TPMS whats the worse could happen? Is there a way to turn off the light on the dash?
If you are keeping the original rims and only replacing the tires, all you have to do is leave the tpms's in place, replace tires, and reset the tpms.
Only have to replace them if you are changing rims.

Im replacing a new set of rims and tires and i want to keep the stock just in case. What i want to know is if i put a new set of wheels and tires w/o the tpms is there a way to turn off the light on the dash and whats the worse that could happen? If the light remains on it's not going to hurt anything besides maybe being annoying looking at it all the time.
I'm with you on the good ole days when you just check your pressure weekly or so. New and improved. Right. Those damn tpms sensors are about $50 a piece and they are fragile as well.
Good luck.
Drsimmons I appreciate you help. I'll try that fuse thing, if not i'll just wait till my stock tires ware off dont want to spend $200 for f'n tpms . $50 to transfer it aready pisin me off lol
The light will stay on.
You may be able to turn it off using NCS Expert but I am not 100% sure on that. Either swap sensors, get new ones, or deal with the light and experiment with coding the car. There will not be just a fuse for TPMS that you could pull and make the car as well as you happy.

Just bite the bullet and get a set of new sensors, $212 from tire rack.
That way you could get a set of snow tires (if you live an a place that gets snow..lol) and keep that stupid light (meant for stupid people that don't know you should check tire pressures occasionally) off.

If doing this once a year IMO get a 2nd set of sensors.
If all else fails just put a small bit of black electical tape in front of the TPMS light. It will be visable at night, but at least it would be out of sight out of mind during the day. Of course, buying a set of new sensors is the solution if the new wheels have a spot to mount them.
I believe they attach to the backside of the stem via the nut.
Oh, you'll see quite abit of those things out here believe me. The funny or absurd comments really make my day. LOL
OK, yet another TPMS question:
If I have two complete sets of wheels/tires both with TPMS', will the car recognize the new TPMS' once the new wheels are mounted or is the some kind of "reset" at the dealership required?
My friend has a Honda and he just changed wheels and he had to take it to the dealer for them to reset to the new sensors and they tried to charge him $60 for that.
I am considering getting new wheels and sensors so that I can avoid tire change fees twice a year. Having to pay for a sensor reset would negate most of that benefit.

No need to go to the dealer as far as I'm aware.
Correct. Just make sure that you get the correct sensors. MINI changed to a different frequency for 2010+ 433mHz if I'm not mistaken. About $230 all in for the sensors and stems. for new wheels.
i'm sure it's in the owner's manual as well. if the friend is to lazy to read it, he/she has no one to blame for being ripped off.
I just bought a new (almost new) 2011 MSC OEM rim with tires from a member on this forum and they had TPMS but my 2009 Clubman would not recognize and activate the TPMS to reset. The lights do stay on all the time...
My car is at the dealer for other services and I asked them to take a look and we will know the outcome. Hopefully, I don't have to buy a new set of TPMS.
If I do then I will have the 2011 TPMS available if someone need them.

Closest thread I could find to my question.
I've read so far that NOT having TPM sensors will not affect the performance of my '07 Cooper S. Does anyone have hands on experience with this?
The reason I ask is: I just had three new rims and tires installed. The forth was the wrong size, so another has been ordered. They swapped over my TPMS from my old rims. They only noticed that the forth rim was wrong after they had removed the TPMS from my old rim and remounted an old tire to it (for a spare). So, now I have three new rims and tires with the TPMS installed. One old tire and rim with no TPMS at all. After I got home and started it this morning it had gone into limp mode. Is it possible that having only three TPMS installed could have triggered this? Aside from being down on power it runs fine.
Any help would be greatly appriciated!
