Some of you in the past mentioned that one would have to get a
lug stud kit (?) to put on certain wheels on the MINI.

Would you let me know why that is? To me it seems like any wheel with
4x100 40-50mm offset 15-19inch with proper hubcentric rings would fit.
What do i need to look out for when I do have to buy a stud kit?

thanks.

How much is the kit and how would we order it online? Also, do you have the locking nut for that size too?

I have the 80 mm studs for $56 plus shipping

I have ultra light forged lugs @ $3.50 each -you can't use a lock with these or you'll feel out of balance.

I have standars for $1 ea

No lock would work with long studs, as the must come thru the middle of the nut, forcing external drive - all locks I sell are internal drive.

We stopped dealing with spline drive hardware 3 years ago, it was not reliable!

Wheel Spacers and Studs or Bolts

Not sure what the answer is though, when to use bolts or studs?

In my case, the aftermarket wheels I chose would NOT accept the stock lug bolts. Some wheels use a standard seat for the lugs and the stock bolt may be retained. My wheels are specialty, and carry their own specific seating so the stock lugs would not seat properly. Luckily the wheels came with the right studs and the wheel specific lug nuts.

Another reason to use studs is the option of increasing offset using spacers. There is a minimum amount the threads be backed out and still retain safety. So a longer lug bolt or the use of longer studs with lug nuts may be more optimal.

I bought my wheel studs from Alex primarily for autocross. It can be a real pain to try to line up the lug bolts. I also use 5mm spacers and the light weight lug nuts.

thanks for the info. From what i noticed, most wheels sold these days
have a taper on the nut/bolt seating area so i thought most all wheels
would basically accept our mini's lug bolts.

now, for those who use offset spacers, i would assume getting longer
lug bolts would be easier than to get longer studs and nuts... no?
but i guess it would be a pita if you're autox-ing and need to swap out
tires often; aligning both the wheel and spacers to get your lugs on
would be tough.

Do the SSR Comps require studs and nuts, or would it accept our
factory lug bolts?

I guess my MINI2 post wasn't totally clear, the holes on the OE wheels are bigger than MOST aftermarket wheels and this allows the OE bolts to engage the mininum number of threads to be safe, as per TR's web site. If your after market rims have normal size holes, not much bigger than the bolt diameter, then the OE. bolts WILL NOT meet the min. number of threads engaged, which is 7.5 turns. SSR's and most other forged wheels are thinner everywhere because they are made of stronger metal and do not need to be as thick to be as strong. Hence, OE bolts are OK with SSR Comps if and only if you are not using spacers. If you are using spacers and/or non forged after market wheels you most likely should have longer bolts or studs to have a safe amount of thread engagement. A MININUM stud length of 1.75" will be needed in most of these other cases and 50mm or 2" would be better. I think a 2" stud is the longest length that will work with the OE wheels and still be able to get the center caps on, unless you are also using spacers. OE wheels with 1/4" spacers would let you use 2.25" studs. Most GOOD wheels use a tapered nut/bolt and the OE bolts are tapered.

OE bolts are 50mm, total length. If you get longer bolts you may need to be careful as they may extend out the back of the wheel hub to much. How much, is to much, I don't know but I wouldn't use a 60mm bolt unless I was also using spacers or a wheel I knew to be thicker than the OE wheels.
