Hankook RS-3 released for the MINI

Hankook is finally showing MINI's some love by releasing the RS-3 in a 215/45/17. To celebrate this release we are running a special on these tires.

These tires are amazing. We used the 225/45/17 version on our street class JCW and took the season championship for the 2010 Redline Timeattack series.

**NOTE** Price does not include mount/balance. Tires will be sold for local pick up only**NOTE**

How much do these tires weigh and are they available in 205-45-17 or 215-40-17 or 205-40-17 and do you have weights for those sizes

They weigh in at 23lbs each. They only come in 215/45/17 or 225/45/17.

Ours is tax included and you forgot to add $50+ for shipping from Tirerack, we are cheaper for local pickup.

1). What are the tire's specs in terms of the treadwear numbers, traction rating and the other usual spec?

2). I'm currently running 205/45/17 Z-1's, any issues in going to the 215/45/17's sizes?

3). Do you have a local tire shop nearby to mount them on? I can't seeing trying to jam all the tires inside the Mini. If you have a local connection, what's their charge for mounting and balancing? Any discounts given since you're selling them.

4). What's the tire's warranties?

5). I'm not into tracking or racing, most as DD tires, so for that purpose, is this not the tire to buy, maybe due to the difference in driving purposes?

140 tread wear, traction A , temperature A.

You will not have an issue running a 215. If you ran the 225's you would need a spacer.

We can moutn and balance them for $25.00 a tire including disposal

4). What's the tire's warranties?

There is no treadlife warranty, only a uniformity warranty which is 2/32"

5). I'm not into tracking or racing, most as DD tires, so for that purpose, is this not the tire to buy, maybe due to the difference in driving purposes?
The MINI is light and will not wear on this tire as much as other cars. Expect long life 10-20k on these tires if you arent tracking it.

I live in Worcester, MA and I need to change my current worn summer tires asap. Can you give me a local shop that has the tires and can mount it for me?
Thanks.

Has anybody put these in 225/50ZR16 on a R56? I'd really like to run this tire in this size if possible. What wheel size and offset made it work for you?

I am running the RS-3 225/50/16 on my 2007 R56... I like the feel of the tire a whole lot! It is only my second year autocrossing and I am still learning so you can take this with a grain of salt... but I really like the way they feel at the edge of traction... which there is a whole lot of! My times are generally a couple seconds lower this year compared to other cars in my club from last year and I am usually the quickest Mini. Or... another measure... last year the best I could do was to be somewhere between the 75%-50%... this year I am in the top 33%-25% with the only difference being tires and a little more experience.

I am using Mini x-lite wheels I got cheap off ebay.

How wide do the R-S3s run?

I ran 235/40/17 R-S2s on an 8" wide wheel on my AWD Talon and the sidewalls were pretty square. May I assume these run (a size up in terms of tread width, perhaps?) wide?

I love the Hankook RS-3 tires on my other cars so I had to get them for my 2012 Mini Copper S to replace the stock run-flats. I got some new RS-3 215 x 45 x 17s on a 7.5 wheel (proper offset for the Mini) that I am about to put on the car. My question is, "What tire pressures should I set the tires at for best traction?" I know that I may want the front and rear PSI to be different given the FWD Mini has more weight on the front wheels. My Mini has factory sport suspension and is still new so all the settings are stock (at this point). Some setup help would be nice too. I have no intentions of racing this car but I do want to know what the different tire settings should be for the best handling and traction.

With the annoying TPMS (tire pressure monitor system) I can't just test the tire PSI and alter the PSI all the time with changing weather conditions. With my other cars I alter the PSI when I feel the car push or rotate and run different PSI for different ambient temps. So I would love to have some place to start for the Mini. I know the RS-3's like some heat so I am not expecting the tires to have insane grip till the tire temp is at least 100F.

"What tire pressures should I set the tires at for the listed driving conditions?"

(?)F (?)R PSI for street driving when the air temp is 60-80F (degrees) on dry surface?
(?)F (?)R PSI for aggressive driving on twisty roads when the air temp is 60-80F (degrees) on dry surface?
(?)F (?)R PSI for somewhat aggressive but safe driving on twisty roads 50-40F (degrees) on wet surface?
(?)F (?)R PSI for auto-x (street tire class) when the air temp is 60-70F (degrees) on dry surface?
(?)F (?)R PSI for auto-x (street tire class) when the air temp is 80-90F (degrees) on dry surface?
(?)F (?)R PSI for auto-x (street tire class) when the air temp is 90-100F (degrees) on dry surface?

LOL, if only it were that easy!

2 bits:
I use a test course, a GTech Pro, and a pyrometer to find the optimum pressure for the front tires. The pyrometer primarily ensures that I am being patient and not overheating the tires with insufficient cool-down time between runs. The GTech gives me some objective data with regard to lateral G. I run 3 lb increments from 32 to 41 on the front axle, and then select the best range and run 1 lb increments within that range. Once the front axle grip is as good as I can get, I then go to the back axle to find the best pressure for neutral handling. Since the Mini is predisposed to understeer, I have always found that for autocross applications running higher pressures improves rotation. For safety on the street I run the back axle at the same pressure as the front.

For the RS3, I wound up at 38/48 for autocross, and 35/35 for the street.

There are many variables though, as you note, so what works for my setup might not work as well for others.

I think the RS3 is a great tire for warm dry conditions, but not so much for cool and damp... At 40-50 F and damp I'd take out a couple of pounds but also expect that folks running the R1R or even the Z1 would eat my lunch...

End of 2 cents...

Cheers,

Charlie

Thank you, That helped me. I set my pressures at 35F and 38R as a starting place. I am not sure a 3 pound split will help the handling but I want to try to reduce under steer if possible.

I really like the R-S2's I have on my R50 in 205/50/16. I 'm considering the R-S3's but would have to run the 225's. Anybody have any feedback with respect to rubbing issues? According to Tire Rack, that size is not compatible with the MINI. Maybe Alex will see this and chime in. Thanks in advance.

I'm running 225x45x17's with no problems, but I also have some camber in the rear with ajustable rear arms.

Wider Tires

Checkers,

I've just started running Bridgestone 225/45 R17s and when I have a heavier person or if I push it too hard in turns or if I hit a bump/dip too hard, "something" rubs in the rear. I haven't been able to determine if it's only on one side or what. Would spacers help to center the tire in the wheel well or was the camber adjustment what helped you.
Being bigger, they sure helped the ride & the traction over the run-flats.

Get some front camber plates and adjustable rear control arms. No rubbing anytime.

rear tires rub since I got 225/45 R 17

Do I need both upper & lower control arms or just the lowers? (I already have front camber plates)

Do you mean the Hankook Ventus R-S3? I got a set of them from SimpleTire.com awhile back and love em. Great tires.
