17x8.5 et30?
probably need a 8" to 8.5" to not get any tire bulge yes. at a et30 they are going to stick out just a little past the arches, and with a 255, dont even think of lowering it, as theyll probably hit arch (if the tires clear the struts inside). A lot will come down to tire choice. They are all pretty different
I would be running Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Specs. I know I'll have to do something for the wheel arches. I know someone was able to push them out a half inch without any other mods. Think a half inch would be enough to allow for 255s on a 8.5 inch wheel? I'm still not sure what wheel to use for the best fit.
Thanks all. I'm still debating on the wheels. It will be my weekend cruising wheels so I want it to be a bit aggressive. I plan to get a set of cheap lightweight wheels with beefy tires for daily driving and canyon carving.

from what I can tell a 255 on a 8.5 is just barely any bulge.. so 8" is too narrow. If the et30 clears the inside stuff, i think you just may well be ok.
I remember seeing lots of threads about 245s. Maybe try and find them to see where you could play with fitment a little..
edit: maybe start with this 20 page+ one. Based on some of these its looking bleak

For reference this is a 17x8.5 et32 with a 205/40. The edge of the tread on a 255 will sit 1" farther out. You will have extreme fittment issues, they might be resolvable but it won't be easy. The most rubber I have seen comfortably fit on a mini with 17's is 235/40 on a 7.5" wheel. Mach V Dan did fit a 245/35/18 but they didn't really fit that well and I think this would be exacerbated on a 17" wheel. Here is Dan's thread: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...fessional.html

For what it's worth on 255's and 8" wheels, Audi...
ran a 255/40 17 factory on an 8" OEM wheel. I know since I own it: the 2000-2004 Audi A6 4.2 (the one w/ the flared fenders). Yes, I know the tire specs say at least 8 1/2 nominally, but Audi did it. Tires look perfectly correct on the wheel (I have run a bunch of different factory sets) w/ zero issues about the tire/wheel combo and no weird "cop car" bulging look or anything like that.
Sorry for the thread jack. I hope Evasive has gotten the help he needed.
I wanted to also thank you guys for all the help. After reading MachVDan's post, I think I have decided to go with a little less aggressive setup and go with 245/40-17s on 17X8 inch wheels with a offset of 40. It should work well on my R56 and at most I might have to push out the fender a touch. That way in the future as MP1.6T said I could also try the 255s later.

Whatever is done, make sure that the rim width is within the tire manufacturer's recommendations for a particular size tire. Making the tire fit rims that are too narrow or too wide is a bad idea.
