The lady at the mini dealer told me neither the MC or MCS comes with a spare. Is this true? If yes, and you don't get runflats, what do you do if you get a flat? If there is a spare, where is it? thanks!

Welcome to NAM!

The Cooper S doesn't come with a spare, but does come with run-flats
The Cooper with regular tires comes with a spare
The Cooper with Run-Flats comes with a spare most of the time

On the Cooper, the jack is located in a well under the rear cargo area. The spare is then located under the car (SUV style) right under the jack (you have to remove the jack to get access to the bolt holding the spare).

The Cooper S doesn't have a spare because the battery is located where the jack is on the cooper (it had to be relocated with the additional space the supercharger took-up in the engine compartment). The COOPER S exhaust is also a routed a bit different (two mufflers versus one on the COOPER) and that prevents a spare from being installed on an S (plus the floor stamping is different between the two models).

DiD,
Thank you. When you say the Cooper with run flats comes with a spare most of the time, how could I be sure to be able to obtain that configuration? Is it a special package you have to know to ask for (seeing as my dealer told me no spares for any model)?

After reading some of the other threads that cover the topic of runflats and having a spare, and being on the fence between ordering a Cooper or the S, this spare issue might be the deciding factor for me and I think I am leaning towards run flats with a spare if I can get that.

Thanks for the explanation of the geography of the back of the car. It all makes sense now! NAM is a wonderful place.

i carry a fix-a-flat can and an air compressor at all times on the MCS with
non runflats. spare tire as a deciding factor between MC and MCS is
pretty severe (?) no?

I was wondering, how much do the stock runflat replacement tires cost?

I was considering an mcs; however, I don't like the idea of having to purchase runflats when replacing tires, I would think they are expensive. I also don't like the idea of driving with non-runflats and no spare.

How many miles can you go on the stock runflats (normal driving) before they need to be replaced?

Does the tire pressure monitor work with the non-runflats on an mcs?

Can anyone help convince me that the cost of runflat replacements should not be a factor when deciding on an mcs vs. mc?

Thanks

yah, r/f's are expensive to replace. i can get about 15k miles on most
hi perf tires if i take it real easy. im expecting about 15k on the SP9000 R/F's
but if you have the 5000's or 3000's expect more like 30k+ i guess.

i think the SP9000 replacements were like up in the 170's or something.

yes, the tirepressure monitor is a passive type so it will work with any
tire you put on (r/f or regular).

i carry a fixaflat can as i mentioned above along with ac air compressor...
so tires should not be your factor choosing a mc or mcs. worst case, just
call roadside assistance.

Thanks for the info kenchan. The replacement cost is a little steep for me. I think I am leaning toward the mc.

Me too, Fridge.

Plus, non runflats seem to give a smoother ride and handle potholes better, or so people on this board have written.

And if I change to non-runflat snows in the winter , there's no place for a spare in the S!

So yes, a spare could be the deciding factor.

Under what configuration would the Cooper come without a spare? My Cooper with 16" runflats has a spare.
