Chain Alternatives

Hello all,

I need some help. I have a business trip coming up next week which would give me some nice one-on-one time with my '09 JCW. My dilemma is winter driving.

I have excellent all-season Michelins (non-runflats) that will get me through some basic snow/ice, but I will be driving up and over the Cascades (Medford, OR to Bend, OR and then back to PDX). I am considering buying either a set of "Spider" chains or "Snow Grip" fabric traction devices. I want these as a back-up. For really nasty weather at home, I have other vehicles to drive.

Anyone out there have some thoughts?

Thanks,

Craig

I'd get the Spider Chains, they are a bit spendy, but will last much longer than the Auto Socks, driving that drive you'll run into gravel which will shred the Auto Socks. I had a Family Emergency come up down Phoenix and made the drive the 2nd Week of March, I was worried about going over the Siskiyou Summit too, and tried to find Auto Socks before I left, but no luck since it was so late in the Season. All went well and Molly did GREAT!!

I've used auto socks two seasons in a row and have loved them. Definitely all snow/ice driving. When the snow dissapeared off the road I pull over and pull em off. Luckily they only take five minutes to re install so taking them off and on is a cinch!
