I have a MCS with 17SLites and Pirrelli RF. 6000 miles. The dealer says MINI does not reccommend rotating tires. What say you?

I will be switching to snows on steelies soon for the comin' winter. Should I pass ther tires around when I hang them this spring?

There is no reason not to rotate your tyres when you put them back on in the spring.

Yes, rotate front-to-rear to get even tire wear. I do mine every 5k miles.

I've never heard a decent explanation for why BMW does not recommend tire rotation. It would not surprise me if their legal team advised them to eschew any legal liabilty that might result from encouraging owners to do *anything* themselves.

Koolmini - the dealer checks out joints and seals for problems, think they replace a microfilter as well. They actually found some problems on mine for the 25K service...had to go back for more warranty repairs.

Unlike the dunlops, I don't think your tires are directional, therefore not only should you rotate them, I'd suggest front to rears, cross rears to front. Every 3-5k miles should be often enough.

Rotate. I had a rental MC with 18K km and the front tires were history. Rears were fine. Too many people driving the car like they rented it.

I just keep replacing front tires with new ones every 8000 miles. The rears seem to last about 3x as long as the fronts.

Well, if I rotated my tires every 3K or 4K miles I'd be out there jacking up my car about once a month...and frankly I have better things to do. Maybe I'm being cranky and irresponsible (to the preservation of my car's tires), but REALLY...I don't mind normal periodic maintenance but I wanted a car...not another hobby. So I'll rotate my tires twice a year (at snow tire change-over) and otherwise try to buy tires that can live with a little less maintenance.

Not to be slow, but you should be able to rotate the tires front to back in a half an hour, if you're moving S-L-O-W-L-Y. It's really not so bad, jsun, but twice a year is probably plenty, unless you're putting crazy miles on your car annually!

No question about it, ROTATE your tires, they will last longer and drive better. Plus they will all four wear out at the same time which makes it easier to replace them as a set instead of two at a time

BMW has a secret contract will all the tire manufacturers they use to shovel this "don't rotate your tires" line to unsuspecting morons that will buy it. OF COURSE you rotate your tires. If Alex (aka Mr. TireRack) does every 3k, you should too!

Okay, I'll move slowly and rotate the tires but won't the car fall off the jack?

Sounds like a two person job. One to drive slowly..Is that possible in a MINI and one to keep the jack in place.

I'll post the video.

Thanks for all the help. Don't know if I'll do 3000 but at least at change over and perhaps one time in between.

Looking to polish off the RF Pirellis and get a wider choice of performance for the fair weather months. Thanks again.

jacking up a hobby car once a month is really no big deal for me... i jack up
my car more frequently to run checkes, etc on my hobby cars especially
since i run it hard.

use 2 jacks and do one side at a time. even with a generic floor jack
and your factory jack, should only take you 15-20min max.

They don't rcommend rotating becasue they are tired of customers coming back and complaining of tire noise INCREASING after rotation.

Rotating tires helps all 4 wear evenly, but you will get increased road-noise after your first rotation since each tires wear pattern is specific to that corner of the car. if you don't mind wearing out the fronts first, and want the quietest ride possible - don't rotate.

Personally I rotate then an put up with the minor increase in noise - it decreases eventually as the tires' wear patterns "settle in."
