R56 Stud Conversion ?

Hey everyone,

Noob question here but I couldnt find the answer while searching. If converting to studs w/ the TSW conversion, how far out do the bolts stick out after the wheel is mounted? Can anyone post a close up of the wheel? Reason I'm asking is because I'd prefer to use close-ended lug nuts. Thanks!

You wont be able to. They stick out about 3/4" to long
I tried and they wont reach the seat of the rim
I use the open end version on my R56

If your frustration is mounting the wheels - you may wish to get a pair of wheel hangers. Here is a thread discussing them:

So do I, but went with TSW as they are the only ones who make a 14mm -12mm stud conversion kit

I am not sure actually how far the studs extend past the wheel but I do know that with the open lug nuts supplied with the TSW kit that the stud comes right to the end of the lug nut when I use 15mm spacers. So if you wanted to go with closed lug nuts you would need nuts at least 15mm deeper (probably would want 20mm deeper) than the nuts in the kit.

I think Gorilla Luguts also makes them. Not sure if they have what you need though.

Wheel Studs

By reading through these threads and searching the web I have not found anyone who makes a stud conversion kit using the stk 14mm size, is that correct? I would really like to stay with the stk 14mm size with black lug nuts.

Old thread, but better than starting yet another thread about stud conversions so here goes:

I ordered a set of Volk te37 wheels from tire rack. These are designed for m14 studs and were sold for use on the chev. Cobalt.

So i'm going to be doing the conversion. I inquired about the hub centric ring with tire rack and i told them about my plans to mount these on the mini using the conversion. and this is what they said:

"Hello

Unfortunately, it is impossible to determine ther correct centering ring when using adaptors. The use of lug adaptors is not reccomended by us as it may throw off the suspension geometry and cause extra wear on your drive components."

I understand them wanting to protect themselves but the main question is: Does using the conversion change the size of the hubcentric ring? am i missing somthing? What should my next move be?

Thanks guys.

Jordan

It sounds like they misunderstood you. Sounds like they are talking about lug pattern adapters....not stud conversions. Lug pattern adapters are basically spacers and would change the hub bore size usually.

I'm not sure how lug adaptors would affect a centering ring. I can't visualize how that would happen, but that doesn't mean it wont.

I went with wheel hangers instead of a lug conversion. They make it easy to swap wheels while using the OEM lug bolts.

Edit: Rally's post just appeared. That makes sense. Still I prefer sliding my wheels onto a smooth wheel hanger, rather than rasping them over the threads of a lug.

What Rally said is correct. There is no way a stud conversion could do what they said.

I have another question about replacing stud conversion. Every time I go get my free rotation at Discount Tire, they want to switch me back to bolts. I have told them if they can find tuner bolts in black I'll consider it. They have tried doing this many times and fail to find 14mm 1.25 tuner lugs in black. My question is, does anyone know of such an animal?

Thanks Rally. I replied back using the correct terms. Hopefully it all works out. I'm going to run a 17x7.5 +37. Do i need to get a different size hub centric ring?

edit* when i looked at the email i sent him, i said lug adapter for some reason. I meant to say stud conversion.

You can use one or two. I prefer two.

When you have the first two bolts in just tight enough to hold the wheel, remove the wheel hangers and put the other two bolts in.

You could just get them powdercoated, no? Should be pretty cheap.

The requirement for hubcentric rings has nothing to do with diameter, width, or offset. It all depends on what the hub bore is on the wheels. I have no idea what the volks have. The MINI has a 56.1mm hub, so you want the wheel to be the same whether it comes that way stock or whether you get hubcentric rings. My guess is that the hub bore in the volks is up in the 70's since it's a JDM wheel so you will need hubcentric rings. It's impossible to tell without knowing what bore the wheels are though.

Here is a link to the TSW 14x1.25 to 14x1.5 conversion. By converting to 1.5 pitch threads, nuts are available in black.
