check out this wheel !!!!!!!!
Alot!
I hope this didn't cause loss of control and an accident.
On the track when this happens you have to always check for debris everywhere that can be
an additional hazzard to others. Please be careful out there.
Do you know if there was a suspension part failure?
Anything in particular cause this? A stock part or aftermarket?
Not good at all

There is a good chance this guy got off the track at one point and caused this damage instead of a part failing out of the blue. Lower control arm or bushing/mount failure by the looks of things.

The story:
1) it's one of my coworkers (the owner's son. He's also our CEO)
2) just put new brake pads on the front, and SOMEONE (I'm not mentioning any names) failed to retorque the wheel studs
3) it lost the wheel studs, and you see the result
4) trashed the wheel, fender and inner fender
5) it's not a race car, it's just one of our toys we drive on the street and occasionally, a track (this is at Willow Springs)
6) there was no suspension or parts failure, just brain fade
Just got the car back from the paint shop (repainted the entire thing), and updated it to include H-Sport Camber plates. It already has Spax coilovers, H-Sport F & R stabilizer bars and rear adj control arms.
Changed out the RH CP8R's for SSR Comps to gain another 1/2" in wheel width. We're taking the car on TrekToSonoma, sponsored by some car magazines. You can checkout pix after the event at:

BTW, we have another car done up the same except for a red roof instead of black. I drive it, and I assure you I torque my nuts! I'm taking it on the Eurotuner Tour and then to NOPI.

Wow, talk about a bad way to walk away from the tracks. At least there was someone who could have taken the blame and paid for the damage, and insurance/warrantee didn't have to be called into question. That would have been tough luck on the driver's part.
What is it will Willow Springs and accidents? Last summer my friend Doug blew a coolant hose at Willow Springs in his E30 M3. Luckily, our mutual friend Tim was following him and smelled the coolant soon enough to motion for Doug to get off the track. Made for a wicked video too.
BTW: let him know that I think his Cooper is tight.

Since we've had a lot of e-mails asking about, we posted a story in our news section of the website detailing what happened and why:

Click on the July section to the left about Willow Springs.
And candycooper, Willow Springs is actually a nice course. I was at Gateway Intl in St Louis over the weekend with our other MINI, and their road course beat me and the car up pretty bad. Willow Springs is much smoother, although not as fast.
I think Willow Springs just has lots of bad luck.

That exact same thing happened to me, only I wasn't on a race track but on the street. Torquing the studs are SO important now I'm paranoid about it. Also, if using non-factory studs or nut make sure they are 100% same length, thread and seating. Mine came off b/c of it being slightly different but fitted.
