Wheel Swaps & Rotation?

I've got a set of 17" wheels (canyon carving) and a set of 16" wheels for comfort. I'll probably be swapping them back and forth far more often than a 5k mile rotation. So my question is, do I need to keep track of which were where when I take them off? Is there any problem with putting them on in random order?

The wheels/tires involved are:
Centerline RPM with Michelin Pilot Exhalto PE2 205/45-17
Rota RB with Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S 205/55-16

Thanks.

Biggest issue is that most performance tires are directional.

I too had several sets of wheels - I put a small pait mark on a set (rears originaly) so that I could keep them paired up.

For the wheels you use daily you can rotate based on mileage or time.

For the wheels you use for performance driving you can rotate them based on your perceived wear on the treads. If you take them out for a drive and you do use them hard you will see that the treads on the outer front edges will become worn in a hurry. You then rotate that wheel to the rear until those tires are equally worn down. Usually right or left side tires will be more worn than the other side. You have the option to flip tires and remount them on the opposite- left tires go right and vice versa. Don't wait until the tread is totally gone, maybe 60% gone is OK and if the tread on the other side of the tire is fairly unworn.

If you have directional tires, they'll be marked as such. If you don't see arrows on the sidewall denoting the proper rotation, you're free to swap them side-to-side.

Follow the direction of the arrow
This tire mounts on the passenger side

Also the tread pattern of the tire will be a clue it is directional

It's just a good idea to keep track of them so you keep then rotated properly and get the most wear out of them. When you take them off just use a sticky note or piece of tape and write down the milege and what position you remove the tire from, then stick it on the wheel for storage...

Thanks for the info. I guess I will mark them from now on.

Neither the P-Zero Nero or the Pilot Exhalto PE2 seem to be directional. So, would you rotate them crosswise -- front left to right rear, etc.?

I have three sets of tires for the MINI and two for the Saab. I used to mark them and keep track but sometimes the tape would come off and sometimes the chalk would smear and sometimes I couldn't remember if the "R" was for right or rear.

Now I look at the tires and put the deepest/most evenly worn tread on the front. Because I do this every 5000 miles or less the tread depth difference is small and I don't engage the "best tires on the rear safety for the foolish" rule.

Life is easier when its random!

Thanks Alex. I should have looked for that in the first place.
