Should I weld in the set screws of PSRS?

Hi guys, just ordered a set of Alta PSRS for my JCW, just wondering if I should weld in the set screws, as I have been doing a lot of research, and some people have reported that this is a fix for the one problem the PSRS have ever had.

Also, are there any other install tips anyone has (apart from what caster setting to set it at)?

Are there many DIYs floating about? Couldn't find any!

Thanks
Elie

Other than welding the set screws, just tack weld the ends to the sleeve. Much easier and it holds just fine.

tack weld the ends of what exactly to the sleeve?

Also, is that instead of welding the set screws, or in addition to?

Instead of......our club just leaves the screws out.

You tack weld the end of the control arm to the metal sleeve. The control arm shaft ends right at the end of the metal sleeve of the PSRS.

Have you read this thread?

Welding is fine. We welded the ones on my GP in because alll the cool people in the PDX MINI club do it....so heck if your buddy jumps off the bridge.. If you don't have access to a welder the screws are just fine. MAKE SURE you tighten the three screws evenly and it isn't a bad idea to use red loctite to make sure they don't move again.

Ok read it.

I also forgot to mention that I'm having a BMW mechanic friend of mine install it, and I live in australia, and I've already bought the PSRS, so I can't order them pre-installed into the bracket. Basically, I'm asking if there's anything beside what ALTA give you in the instructions that I should do.

I think I'll screw in the set screws, AND tack weld the ends/sleeves. Any other thoughts?

+ on tack welding the ends and also installing the set screws. The first time I didn't tack weld them, just the set screws, and they were constantly loosening up after I installed my coilovers (stiffer suspension).

I got tired of tightening them up and dropped the sub frame again and had them tack welded. Take it from me, weld them the first time, it's kinda a pain in the butt to drop the sub frame.

Thanks for the input
So you tack-welded the screws as well as the sleeves?

No, I tack welded the bushing to the control arm, but I also used red loctite on the set screws. After you have the bushing tack welded, I doubt the set screws do anything, it was just easy to do, so I installed them.

After re-reading my last post, I just wanted to clarify that it is the bushing sleeve that needs to be tack welded, not the actual bushing... I know that seems obvious to most, just wanted to be clear.

hehe fear not, the second they get installed, I will report.

They haven't arrived yet (shipping O/S is not an easy thing). Should be ready sometime next week...

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I just installed my PSRS.

However, the welder didn't work, so we had to install it with red loctite alone, and surprise surprise, the set screws came loose and the knocking/rattling ensued.

Can anyone who has taken the arm/bushing off and welded the arm onto the sleeve let me know how they went about it?
That is, did people who welded the PSRS in place disconnect the bushing carrier before welding? My mechanic said there's the distinct danger of overheating the bushing (and any grease inside). Should I fully remove the bushing carrier before welding, or do it as is?
