Installed H&R Coilovers

Due to the continued backorder situation, I canceled my Eibach order and went ahead and purchased H&R Street Performance Coilovers. I just finished installing the coilovers and went for a quick spin around the block. I am pleased with the ride. Very smooth, nice over bumps, good turn-in.
One thing that bothered me a bit is the suspension kit came with no instructions, spanner wrenches or bushings to allow the H&R rear shocks to properly bolt to the lower arms. I had to buy a couple of bushings (soft rubber) so I could at least finish the install and drive the MCS. Tomorrow I will look for some harder polyurethane bushings to swap out the temporary soft rubber ones. Once I have the ride height dialed in and the new bushings installed, I will have the MCS aligned. Post some pic's in a couple of days.

Here is a pic right after H&R Street Perf coilover install and new PS2's that replaced the Toyo Proxes 4's. Still have to mess with small ride height adjustments and probably install a 19mm RSB.

Looks good VJD, much better
How much did you lower your car?

I have a set of these coilovers on order. Have to wait a couple of weeks to get them as they are on backorder. I plan on lowering my about 1".

Give us a review of them after you've put some miles on.

Don't know where you have em on order and not necessarily trying to snake a sale, but I do have those in stock and can certainly ship to BC in 1-2 business days. Our pricing is EXTREMELY competitive so please let me know if I can help!

Thanks again!

I'm getting them from Garage 5 in Richmond, BC. They are a retailer of Alta's. Plus I'm getting them installed there so just may have to wait it out.

No problem! Have them ring us up and we can wholesale them to them, so you can have them ASAP. Maybe even put them with some other ALTA items. I just want you to get the items you need ASAP.

Good luck!

Hahaha, I've got a whole wish list of Alta parts. Would be nice to get those coilovers though.

Adam,

Thanks for the tech support and quickly sending out the coilovers. Got them the next day after ordering. Excellent service and product. Your stubby antenna looks good too Vic

I am considering getting the RSS club sport Coil overs from H&R. I am worried the street performance will be too slow and soft. I find the sports suspension a bit of a disappointment.

Were your Street Performance set a direct replacement? If you set the spring pearch to the upper limit is it higher then stock?

ALTA deal with those coilovers?

Do you think you could raise your car back up to stock hight with the spring pearch at max? the website gives a max and min..but my old ground controls setup for the E30 and my CIVC both could lift the cars like SUV's or slam them to the bumpstops.

When I took the pic's right after the installation, the front spring perches where set at the top and rears mid position. As pictured, the front is as high as it will go, the rear's can be adjusted up or down. The ride is not overly stiff or harsh and for some folks, who want to track their cars, this set up might be a bit soft. It is just right for me as I will not track my Mini. With the addition of a larger RSB, this setup should be good for street use.

VJD, nice pics It looks like you've got 18" rims on your MCS, are you having any problems with the tires rubbing or with ground clearance?

Thanks. Yes I have 18's. They are Konig Again 4's, 18/7.5 with ET45mm. Tires are 205/40/18, Michelin PS2's. No rubbing or ground clearance issues.

Install was easy even without instructions. Only challenge was properly bolting the H&R rear shocks to the trailing arms. OE rear sports shocks have a solid beveled bearing that fits into the OE arm; the H&R's don't. I had to buy a couple of Energy polyurethane shock bushings, so the H&R's could be attached to the arms. All said and done, the inclusion of instructions, spanners and proper rear shock bearings/bushings would have be welcomed.

VJD,

Well, at least i'm batting .333. The spanners were included with my kit. Did you need to use spring compressors? I think I read somewhere they were not necessary, but don't want to kill myself taking apart the OEM setup either.

Nothing but the coilovers. Mini goes into the dealer on Wednesday for an alignment. After the alignment I should know whether I need rear control arms?

At least you got the spanners H&R packing QC must be a bit inconsistent. Yes, I used spring compressors to remove the OE springs and install the H&R springs.

VJD,

Now that you've had some time to drive on these have your initial impressions changed?

Does the suspension travel seem shortened? is it really stiff for daily driving? Do you have any new rattles in the car as a result?

First impressions have not changed. Suspension travel, spring and damping rates seem perfectly suited for street use. Not too stiff, just right...IMO. I'm very satisfied with these coilovers. Next purchase will be a 19mm RSB which should help flatten out the Mini around tight lower speed corners. My only problem is I seem to be driving faster now!
