I'm curious, what oil did you use? I mean, if it was normal mineral based oil and you are going the distance that BMW recommends, then yes, it is possible that you blew the bearings as that oil can't go the distance. However, if you were using FULL synthetic (not the mix) then you should have been ok.

The dealer screwed up. In any case the dealer wants to put a screwing to this guy he does not deserve. This kind of stuff hacks me off bad.

Here's a tip for everyone. If you run your car out of any fluid. Make sure to top it up before it gets to the dealer. Could save much grief later.
The sping presses against a ball or plunger. The spring rate sets the pressure at which it opens. This is a safety feature in case the filter gets plugged. If the spring goes, then it opens at basically 0 psi. Then it depends on where the drain of the by-pass is routed. If it goes to the pan, then no pressure. If it goes around the filter, then pressure but no filtering. I think most dump to the pan as it's easier to route.

Glad to hear you have some friends in high places. That is what it is going to take with teh dealer...man they don't like to be kind when your car need +$1000 in warranty repairs(clutch)...Good luck

One question...

If you bought the car with 29k miles on it, how did you change the oil at 19k miles?

I hope you got it fixed though.

I guess due to lack of response from the OP that he no longer owns a Mini. Probably never got what he deserved, an unfortunate victim of an unscrupulous Auto Manufacturer (BMW).

Too bad, really.
