Remote Key Problems

looking for help on my remote key. got my mini in germany and shipped it all the way to manila. since there is no mini dealer in manila, i had to order a replacement key (lost the remote) all the way back in germany. I have it already. the key itself works well enough (can open the doors manually, start the car...) but the remote buttons don't function... any ideas?

Here's what you need to do....
You need to have all the keys with you when you get in the car.
1. Get in the car and shut the doors. (don't open any of the doors until you are complete.
2. Put a key in the ignition and turn it to the first click, then back and take the key out. You need to do within five second I was told and that is what I did.
3. HOLD DOWN the unlock button, and press the lock button 3 times, then release the unlock button. The doors of the car should lock or unlock. Don't touch the doors or door locks.
4. The wrong directions I had said to repeat all the steps from the beginning. The wrong part is that once you put another key in the ignition it ends/restarts the programming sequence.
5. So once the doors have locked/unlocked then just do step 3 with the other keys. Just hold down the unload button, press the lock 3 times and release the unlock button.
6. Once you do this will all the keys then you can open the door or put a key in the ignition and the programming is ended.
7. Then try the lock and unlock on all the keys. If they don't work you can try it again to make sure you didn't screw it up
Also take note the key's battery needs to be charged, which takes about an hour of driving (sounds like you already did it but just to make sure you dont have unecessary troubles.

Report back if this helps, it's kinda a tricky process.

thanks a lot!! this is really a way cool site with way cool (not to mention fast on the reply) people. got the same instructions on another thread and dashed faster than my MCS to try it out. unfortunately, it didn't work so i thought all was lost. thankfully, you put in the additional note that i need to drive and charge the battery!!! now i have a reason to shut this PC down and start motoring!! almost tore the new key while doing it over and over! thanks again! its a real comfort to know there's a mini community online to help out. the BMW dealerships here in manila abound but they opted not to include the mini in the assist. they're way scared that the mini would sell more than their 3 series...

Another thing you want to look at is the micro switch buttons inside the key. Once one in my key came loose. It only took a minute to open the key and with a dab of solder had it fixed.

Stephen at Stephen's garage did the same fix for me a few months back. He did it for free because he had other customers with the same problem and I offered to let him use my key as a guinea pig. The deal was that if he fixed it, it would be free and if he broke it I wouldn't complain about my already broken key.

What year MINI do you have??? If its an early MINI, you can't just do the whole pressing the buttons thing. It has to be programmed to the vehicle by the factory/dealership. It would have come with a white tag with a bar code and a bunch of numbers/letters on it. If it did... don't loose that tag or you will never have a chance of programming that key.

MotorOn, what years of MINI does that cover, cause I was told that my 04 doesn't charge the battery while driving.

healy67, ScottinBend, i think you're both right. One, the new key i got did have the white tag and bar codes. Two, my MCS is an '04 model. Tried the whole driving thing (to charge it) and redid the instructions...zip..nada. it still aint working. now if i do have to have it programmed by a dealer then im definitely out luck cause we dont have one here and i have no plans of going back to germany just to have the key done. hopefully, i can take the key somewhere in the west coast and they can do it there. will make sure to keep the tag..

The dealer can program it, and hopefully they won't take you for to much money.....

Question, what happens when the battery in the key dies? (does it lose it's pairing?) As well, how lng are those batteries lasting?

Thanks.
