tranny fluid

Howdy,

I'd like to replace my tranny fluid. I've heard Redline MTL is good, but it's not available nearby. Is there I good brand that's commonly available?

Thanks.

Hi I use the Motul Gear 300 oil and find they work very good. I heard some people have problem with the Redline MTL... I do not remember what it is about, but few had transmission failure because of the oil.

I haven't heard of any problems with MTL. I run it and shifting became noticeably smoother. The main problem with transmission fluids is the fact that it has to protect the gears but also be "sticky" enough to allow proper syncro engagement. The wrong type of fluid may drastically reduce syncro life. I'm pretty sure MTL meets the requirements.

If you don't mind ordering online, JSCSpeed has very good prices on Redline products.

i used redline in my scirocco back in the day, and my transmission ended up failing in about 30K miles. was it because of the redline fluid? who knows. in all honesty, i really liked the quick shifts i got with redline, and those trannys had a known problem. was it a strange coincidence?

as for me, i will be sticking with the stock BMW approved fluid. why? redline has what they call "friction modifiers" that help with synchronizer engagement. well, how do these same "modifiers" protect the rest of the transmission, specifically all the bearings and gear teeth surfaces. besides, don't you think the transmissions on the minis shift wonderfully already? you get my point.

i'm not poopooing on redline fluid, just my $0.23.

que up the "i've never had a problem with X number of cars over X number of years or X number of miles" posts...

If ordering online, go to Myoilshop.com and use dealer code 675421 for a 10% discount.
I have used them many times, service and prices are very good.

You will need to buy 2 quarts. There will be a little left over.

Is the Motul Gear 300 oil for a full transmission(syncros and all) or is it just for transfer cases/rear ends? Is 75w90 to thick/thin?

Right now it is a toss up between Redline MLT 70w80 and Motul gear 300 75w90 for my transmission fluid change.
