Service Engine Soon Light

Just came on for the first time, and there's still 3000 miles to go. Should it have come on this far from the service interval? Will it go out, or will it remain annoyingly on for the next 3000 miles?

Gromit, the SES is not a service interval indicator; it means something is wrong somewhere. Get yourself to an AutoZone and have them read the code that set the light (if you don't have a code reader). If they can't tell you what the code means, post it here for some help.

ses is usually related to emissions, not really your service schedule.

How far is your dealer (sounds like your under warranty)? If you go in and you're close they will sometimes go a bit early and save you the trip if its a long drive.

The light came on while my wife was driving, and she tells me that there was no change in the performance or sound.

Stop by an Autozone it may be something small, that you can fix quickly, wait until you need the oil change or may have to make an appoinment for.

If the local AutoZone has a code reader, where do I tell them to plug it in?

Autozone or another parts house close? That way you could at least have the codes read to give you some idea of what you're dealing with.

^^ Get it checked out if the SES light stays on for a few days. I had my light go on after I filled up with different gas (usually use Mobil.. used Speedway once) after I filled up with my normal gas, the light has not come back on...

Well, tomorrow will tell the tail. I'll go by the local AutoZone, see what the code is. Hopefully I'll figure out where to find the plug-in.

Driverside foot area, left side just about where the hood release would be on a normal car. Has a little cover on it that flips down. Just lay on your back with your head under the steering wheel and you'll be sure to see it.....

To the left of the steering wheel, under the dash there is a little door,
pop it open and the OBDII connector is right there...

the cover that says OBD will be facing the floor, number 2 is the where you will
plug in the code reader.

I have had my SES light on a few times. Each time it was the O2 sensor.

Keep in mind that the light is triggered by an out-of-spec reading from one of the sensors. Doesn't necessarily mean that the sensor is bad. This could be as simple as the fuel cap not being snugged down properly, or MiniMac2005's case of bad gas .

I have 30,000 miles and it has happened at 15,000 miles and 28,000 miles. This has happened to many others as well. The good news is that it is no big deal usually. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=86048

My 2002 S ate three O2 sensors in 25,000 miles. The 04 and 06 have never thrown a light.

Ahh ... the joys of MINI ownership.

Its actually better to just pick up a cheap Actron code reader and it can reset the code ... no need to go to the dealer if its nothing like the gas cap

Make sure the gas cap is on tight. It's embarassing to go to the dealer when that's the only problem.
