I have a light in my speedo for the gas cap, and it does work.

Funny, my cap has been loose and the indicator has not come on but the SES light did. I wonder if it's like the flat tire monitor which sometimes comes on after you already know the tire is flat.

Well, here's how things stand. I first stopped at Chevron to get a tank of gas, time for some Techron. Started the car, the light was still on.

Went to AutoZone.

NEWS: In California, the BAR has said that AutoZone can no longer perform the OBDII for free for the customer. Too many complaints from garages about them taking business away. They will "loan" the reader to a customer for a deposit of $149. I don't think so. I can buy one cheaper than that.

I went back to my car, started up, no more light. We'll just leave well enough alone for now.

Hmm.

IN any case, a cheap Actron reader should be standard in every MINI glovebox. I'm surprised MINIUSA doesn't make them part of the tool kit. (No, I am not joking).

No worries. They do it in the other 49 states. Leave this one to be the oddball.

I'm having a similar problem. Code is P2096.....2nd O2 reading lean. Has anyone else had that code before?
My light will come on for about 2 days and then go off for a day or so, then come back on AGAIN....
Motor On!

Try starting and stopping the engine 5 times. Let it run about 10-20 seconds each time before shutting it off. This is supposed to clear any codes that were minor and thrown. If the SES light goes off, take the car around the block and if the SES light stays off, you should be OK.

Atleast this is the trick I was told about. It worked on my car when I installed the BPV and started it the first time. I would try it and see what happens.

Maybe someone who has more experience will chime in....

Gromit, I always have my reader with me..
We could have done a read this weekend on the wine run
(before the wine !!!)

I run between concord and fremont every other day.

If you want to meet me I'll read it for you.

We don't live in the Bay Area, but the SES is out, and it is behaving itself.

Thanks for the offer though.

Keep an eye on it...

Mine went on and off for about a month before it finally stayed on for about a week straight. Took it into the dealer and they replaced the O2 sensor under warranty. It seemed really soon for only 20K or so miles, but I guess it does happen.

Funny...I just brought my '06 in to the dealership for the SES light. I have 12,000 miles on it, and it turned out to be the O2 sensor (code P0036). After replacing the sensor, the SES light remained on when I started the car. The dealership ended up having to replace the wiring to the sensor as well because of a faulty wire (could have happened during the work to the sensor, or they said, could have been caused by rodents...damn those city rats!) Good luck and I hope everything works out!

Stoopit California autozone...Why do they care if other mechanics are missing out because they charge too much for a 1 minute job?

Might want to actually read what was originally posted in #28. It has nothing to do with any decision AutoZone has made. It's a decision by the Bureau of Automotive Repair.

Any recommendations of what readers to buy these days? The options seem plentiful, just want to know what works well with our MINIs. Thanks

I got the SES light yesterday.

Haha that's pretty cool. More features than I really need and another rectangular gauge to figure where to mount. LOL
