Is the '07 CVT w/Steptronic Mode improved over '06, '05 and '04 versions?

Does anyone know if the 6-Speed CVT w/Steptronic Mode transmissions for the '07 Minis are improved versions over the ones offered in previous years?

I have an '07 on order with CVT and am rather unsettled after reading several posts on this forum with folks having transmission problems.

Thanks.

The 2007 R52 Convertible is the only MINI that will have the CVT and it will be indentical to the version on MINIs before it. However the software will surely be updated throughout it's life-cycle.

Also an FYI - the CVT is not a six speed - it's a 0 speed since it has no gears.

Teehee, I don't know why but that made me laugh - very funny

Thanks, Gabe for the information. And I suppose that all the failures and problems with the prior versions of CVT will likely continue in '07 since CVT will be identical to the prior versions? That's not exactly something to look forward to.

I'm sure the failure rate on the CVT is very low but I wouldn't want to recommend it to anyone because I personally know one person who had trouble, and I've read more than a couple of others.

If you can spring the extra for the MCS version, it's a "normal" auto transmission

I can't really disagree with you. software has been improved and that's always been an issue with the CVT. However I would strongly recommend saving your money and getting a manual if you're worried about the long term reliability of the CVT.

Yes, reading those problem posts has made me queasy. I'll have to check with my MA tomorrow to see if I can make a change. I have a production number but no VIN yet. Additional cost of an MCS is not a problem but perhaps I would be better advised to get the 6-speed manual?

I guess our posts crossed as I saw yours after I sent my last. Long term reliability is important to me. I'm going to ask my MA if I can get a 6-speed manual transmission instead of the CVT I originally ordered. Thanks for your advice, Gabe.

I would highly recommend both those ideas for a number of reasons.

Another FYI - the Cooper Convertible comes with a 5-speed manual.
