Pops and Bangs

On the way to work this morning, about four or five pops or bangs eminating from under the bonnet. No warning lights, no limp mode; just continuing on as normal and getting nervous as to what is going on under there. Once off the freeway, it stopped, though my engine speed would attain the same levels as I went through the gears on the surface streets.

When I got to work, I popped open the bonnet, but couldn't detect anything amiss.

Any ideas?

Stone-stock MCS-JCW, just under 5000 miles.

Not exhaust burble. Like I said, it's under the bonnet.

The SA at Niello also wondered about fuel contamination. It's a fresh tank of Chevron Supreme.

The plugs have never been out (still under 5k). I would think the problem would have continued even after I was off the freeway. it that were the case.

Did a squirrel leave nuts under your bonnet and they were bouncing around?
