Knocking/tapping sound at idle

Was thinking this was normal... But just to see... I've been having a knocking/tapping sound that I hear at idle. Doesn't seem to be the harmonic balancer problem that others have had since this is only at idle. I haven't gotten under the hood yet to investigate further, will do so tonight, but wanted to see if anyone else has had a similar sound at idle. It sounds like piston slap or a VERY sticky lifter. I always hear it in the morning when first starting out, but it usually only gets loud AFTER the temp gauge has shown that it reached normal operating temp.

I get that every few times I drive the car (it's not regular), and it sounds like a ticking. Is yours all the time, or only some times?

I have the same issue, knocking sound when in neutral. I had my dealer look at it when I went in for my first oil change. They concluded it was the fly wheel and it will be replaced as soon as they get the part in.

I'm pretty sure I hear it all the time. I can even hear it over the radio... Hopefully this eve I can verify. I have a 30 min drive from work and plan on doing some running around before getting home...

I'll probably have them check it out when I take it in to get my passenger side window looked at/fixed - it's squeeking when lowering... Grr...

Also forgot to mention, I ran the car for about 30-45 seconds w/the oil cap off this weekend when I was getting ready to change the oil and heard the knocking/tapping quite loudly - needless to say I turned the car off quickly.

Ok, problem exists all the time. I noticed this morning that when I press in the clutch, the noise goes away. So I'm guessing I also have a flywheel issue too. :-{

I thought this was normal too but I just took in my car this morning for a scheduled maintenance and they informed me that my flywheel needed to be replaced. This was what was causing all the noise when my car was in idle. No charge to fix but won't get my Mini back until Monday.

Submitted a service request online - we'll see how long/if they get back to me to schedule service.
