Do I worry?

New Cooper S, just broke 1000 miles. Not my daily driver, noticed today that the exhaust tips have some black residue on them. Is this normal during the breakin period? Oil level looks fine.

The car runs very rich for what it is.

you will notice the black on there quite often, and its completely normal.

Get some Meguiar's metal cleaner and keep it handy along with some microfiber towels. It is completely normal to have the dirty exhaust pipes.

there is more intially but it never really goes away, I had some hair like deposit by 5k (it was just the cat breaking in) but since then just a powder like bit on the tips, just make sure to wipe it off reguarly so it doesn't stain the tips!

Normal, this happens on most cars. It will keep happening, just clean it off.

You don't need anything special to clean it off. I use my regular car wash soap & the sponge/mitt that I use to get the nasty brake dust off my wheels. Exhaust black comes right off & looks as good as new
