Thought of upgrading my BC1 to a BC2

I called some wreckers locally, one guy laughed when I asked for new Mini Cooper parts, the other guy said "good luck!"

Called a national distributor, he did a search, and found 3 in ALL OF NORTH AMERICA!!!! $300......

Boo hoo! I wanted instantaneous MPG!!!!! Anybody know of an 04, 05 or 06 that's being parted out?

Matt

Check the differences in features so there are no suprises if something does'nt work the same. Don't forget it needs to be coded as well.

I'm curious why you are thinking of this.

On the BC1

there are two average MPG indicators.

On the BC2, instantaneous is supported as well.

With my MDX, that has instantaneous, I've used that for feedback on driving style, when trying to get more MPG....

I've done some reading, and it looks to be upgradeable, and there's a local non-Mini shop that has the equiment to code it....

where do you go for coding? I would prefer to avoid the dealership.

It looks like you're trying to retrofit the OBC. I've seen a pdf procedure on that on motoringfile. All it involves (if I remember correctly) is retrofitting a new turn signal stalk with the button and uploading the correct software. You can change out the stalk if yours doesn't have the button, but it'll take a dealership service department to reflash the computer.

Look here:

http://www.motoringfile.com/howto/OBC.PDF

Hope this helps,

Thanks...

But I've got nav and the current OBC... So I'm really just looking for a friggin SW upgrade, but I can't get that without getting the freakin part!

But thanks for the post....

FWIW, I've seen threads where others have hacked the wiring harness to not have to upgrade the turn signal, then it's just getting it enabled....

Hmm I will be watching how you go with this, as I have been looking into this for a while.
One thing that I have been told might stop you is the programming of the cars total miles, as the BC1 will lock out after 1000km (1000 km is to let the dealers do a quick replace and see if it fixes the prob) you will be able to code the zcs and Vin but not the total miles using BMW machines….. well this is what I am told, so we will see.

No clue....

but at $300 for the feature, I may just do without. As for the milage thing, there are others that have had to replace their body control unit.....

But if what you say is correct, we just figured out how to "roll back" the odometer!

You're correct if the BC1 stores redundant mileage data as it seems like it would as the closest thing to a lamp module is the BC1 (BMW stores redundant mileage info in the lamp module). Main mileage storage is in the speedo, and when you replace BC1 and vin code it, and speedo will transfer mileage info to the new BC1. This prohibits using a used BC1 if mileage info is actually stored there as VIN is already coded to it. Also BC1 and speedo mileage must match along w/ VIN otherwise you'll get this dot on your speedo.

So if BC1 actually stores the mileage info you will get this annoying dot on your speedo, but it should function fine

Huh? I thought he wanted to upgrade to a bc2 to get additional obc features. He has access to coding, so the only issue I can see is the pice of the bc2.

Where did you here about the bc2? If it is on 06's will it work on earlier cars?

If the BC holds redundant odo data then he'll have this dot on his speedo indicating that mileage info between the speedo and BC doesn't match, not to mention the VIN. I'm not sure that BC holds the redundant data, but if it does there will be a dot.

The dot doesn't impede any functionality of the BC, it'll be an inconvenience at the dealership trying to explain why he has a BC w/ a different VIN. This is just how BMW does things.

And if they haven't changed any pin assignments then 06 BC will work fine with earlier BCs.

Yes, I know about the data storage, but why is that an issue if he access to coding? Besides, he needs to code the new module any how. Are you sure that the bc1 is used for reduntant storage? I'll have to check my references.

Checked it out, your right about the data storage, but the mileage stuff is moot because it would be a new bc1 anyway.

Actaully it's my fault. I didn't re read the whole thread and didn't realize he was looking at used bc modules.

That brings me to this...
USED bc module, WHAT!

Semi OT, has the doulble lock feature been phased back into production? I'm bummed my 03 doesn't have it.

Hehehe ok glad i didn't waste my energy typing all that up then

I always thought they had the dlb lock feature. I have an 04 so I wouldn't know if they removed it from the 03's like w/ the rear aux power outlet.

What about dbl locking do you miss exactly? I haven't noticed it in everyday sitatuions, unless you're talking about pulling the interior handle twice when locked to open.

Being able to leave the windows opened when I leave the car. I may see if I can rig it up to work.
