Oil consumption during break in?

I have just over 600 miles on my '05 MCS. I noticed I was half a quart below full and topped her off. I do not know what the oil level was from new (I hope full).

I know that some oil consumption is normal until the rings get worked into the bores.

I am curious to know what others have experienced.

Thx,
Erik

That is about the range I had as well. Has not burned much since then and I'm at 14,500 now. Reminds me I need to check that sucker, it has been a few weeks.

OK. I admit it, I need some help on this one. I just checked my oil after reading this post. I'm a little confused by my dip stick.

Yellow plastic tip about 1" long toped with a black dot then the yellow continues for about another 1/2" or so.

I'm assuming that "normal" is the black dot? Correct?

I miss my old stick is was for dumbies and said min and max with an arrow. Leave it to the brits to screw me up..

The guys at work told me that I should get an oil change sooner than the 10,000 miles because of metal shavings and stuff from the new parts. Or alternatively, change the filter and add a quart of oil. Thoughts?

Most people on these forums will tell you to change your oil around 2k miles to get all that break-in crap out of the engine. You might want to wait a little longer depending on how you drive but 10k miles on the original oil is way too long.

Wish I could help you. I have an MC and the dipstick on those are very easy to read (and I'm a girl who knows nothing about cars). I'm sure someone who owns an MCS will help you out.

Ok. On the MCS's sad excuse for a dipstick, you have two small indents with a rough section in between. The oil level should go up to that last indent. The easiest way to do it is to dry the dipstick off and look at the cloth to see how high the oil gets up to. Use your thumb to press the cloth onto the dipstick so there's no smearing.
