windshield crack

Harley has developed her second crack in the windshield..lower middle, right in front of the auto ac sensor...
The first windshield was replaced w/o any problems or hassles...now I have to have it done again....Has anyone else had this repeat problem..this is not a stone chip, it started below the windshield wipers and moved up..

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this....

Do a search for stress crack, you'll find a few days worth of reading... In order to find out if you will have a problem getting it replaced under warranty you can do the "pen test." This is the same test your dealer will do when determining if this is in their mind a stress crack, or something else.

Take a ball point pen, with the ball point out and run it on the crack. If the pen snags anywhere in the crack, you'll fail and the dealer attibute the crack to a something hitting the windshield and won't repair it under warranty. If however the pen doesn't snag, you have a recognized stress crack and it will be covered.

If you do in fact have a stress crack my suggestion is to now protect that crack. Take some scotch tape and cover it, this will lessen the chance that a rock might actually strike your windshield in the area of your stress crack and cause a chip that might actually cause your dealer to deny the claim...

BTW what year is your car?

Me too

My 04 Mini just developed this same problem. When I called the dealer they said it wasn't a manufacturer defect. Those were issues the 02's had. Reading here I discover that isn't true. This sounds like an uphill battle. They quoted me $275.00 to replace which is a good price based on other posts. Still it would be nice if they would just fess up and fix the darn thing.

You're dealer is partly right. There was a manufacturing defect in the '02s that ws causing a problem in those cars, but later models had the stress crack problem as well.

Do the pen test, if the windshield passes this test, bring the car to the dealer and fight it. If you fail the test, there's little you can do...

However, I haven't seen any reports of problems with an '05 windshield yet...

Remember though that sometimes a crack will fail the pen test if the crack changes direction (even slightly) as that change will often result in a chip of glass popping out. A good dealer will recognize that and still cover your windscreen under the stress fracture problem even if it fails the pen test. I experienced this first hand and it was covered.

Just out of curiousity, do you remember the circumstances that caused the crack? i.e was it really cold outside, and you set your internal temperature to Hi???

Reason I ask is, I have also had a stress crack, and suspect it was something to do with above scenario. I'm now afraid to put my a/c temp. on Hi now because everytime I do, the dash and the area around the windshield starts to pop and crack and make noises. (But it has to be cold outside).

crack conditions

My windshield was fine in the morning. I came out of work at 10pm after work, and found the crack..The car was sitting all day, with the sunscreen in..No unusual conditions....
It just appeared during the day........
