Mysterious Beeping inside dash with no light or indicator
SOLVED
Ok Brief backstory, purchased a 2006 r53 with Aisen Agitronic Auto with 80k six months ago....with a decent Maintenance history via Carfax (a little vague the last couple years) since then I have performed ALOT of maintenace and performance mods and been thru the car with a fine tooth comb ....And I have a BMW specific Scan Tool that accesses all Electronic systems far beyond OBDII ....SO i have become very familiar with this car with ALOT of research and wrench time.
THE ISSUE: this has happened about 6 or 7 times while at freeway speeds usually under acceleration , from inside the dash somewhere is a beeping sound ....its not overly loud and could acually be overpowered with the radio and occupant conversation.....but while driving with the windows up alone its very noticable ...it only sounds for about 10 seconds and does NOT have any corresponding dash indicator light. There is no noticeable performance decline or operational thing happening with the car..... Nothing to indicate why its beeping or what is beeping about.... If I just continue driving unchanged it stops and there is no indication to inform you what it is or why its beeping. Its NOT the reverse perimeter warning cause im always at freeway speed....I can only locate its origin in a very general sense cause it only happens very briefly then stops. Its not the Warning chime for Key in Ignition ...its coming from somewhere else although close under the dash.... It sounds like an old school beeper from the 80's before cell phones. I have the electronic version of the Bentley shop manual, a Haynes Manual and a Haynes OBDii manual and cannot find any refernce that identifies this sound (although I only did several keywoird searches of the Bently manual ...its a 1000+ pages)
For the first time today It happened 3 times during a 12 mile drive to a friends house, each time under acceleration of different degrees at freeway speeds. Im not a conservative driver and kickdown the engine sometimes when i want to get out, get away, or get out front...(so to speak) The car performs wonderfully and has adapted to my mods very well. here is a list of mods . NON OF WHICH should be acticvating any warning beeper
- DIY K&N CAI (airbox ported thru backwall with cowl scoops instead of grates)
- One Ball Mod
- Aftermarket Intercooler -
- doorman power steering fan
- Gold resistor first stage cooling resistor bypass mod
- 180 degree thermostat with ALum Housing and a 2nd stage Cooling fan manual toggle switch
- New blue Silcone Coolant hose kit
- Aftermarket Coolant TEMP Gauge in Celcius with Batt Voltage
- Lowering Spring/ Adjustable Rear lower ctl arms/ Godspeed front adjustable end links / Bilstein B4's all around
- Billet aluminum Coolant Expansion and Power Steering reservoirs
- CravenSpeed Tower Defenders and DIY tower brace
- Ralley Lights on gril
- Downforce Aero Wing on spoiler and other Misc Cosmetic body add ons (tow hooks, door cups, gas cap chrome ring and much more..)
- 16" Drag wheels with Forceum Hi performance Hena tires 205/45/r16 and 8mm wheel spacers
- ENA Performance Coil
I havent even done a pully mod yet but is planned soon (15% probably) I have purchased most of what I need for the 100K service and already and did some of it when i bought it IE: plugs , cables, coolant flush with New Blue, oil and FIlter, Gas Filter, (still havenew water pump new O2 sensors, new Belt and tensioner, new oil for the supercharger, new crank position O ring,
and this is not a complete list but as you can see im not a rookie or newbie ,
I CAN NOT FIND A REFERENCE ANYWHERE BY ANYONE ABOUT THIS BEEPER. AND CANNOT DETERMINE WHAT I WAS DOING OR WHAT THE CAR WAS DOING TO SET OFF A HIDDEN MYSTERY BEEPER...... ANYONE WHO MIGHT HAVE AN IDEA WHAT THIS MIGHT BE, PLEASE CLUE ME IN.
So far my experience with this car is awesome and i love it, the best driving experience ever in a car ive ever owned and just keeps getting better with Mods and ime not finished but solving this would be great cause its a little disconcerting as it happens when i am pushing the car into performance mode.
ANY THOUGHTS....anybody???? 16" drag wheels with Manzo lowering springs, adjustable Godspeed end links and Forceum Hena tires 205/45/r16

Hmm... that's an odd one. I am not aware of any hidden warning beeper under the dash. Was climate system on during these beeps? I wonder if there could be a leaf or something lodged in one of the vent tubes and it vibrates at just the right frequency occasionally? I have often wondered if those forward facing cowl vents make noise at speed - could it be that? Where under the dash? Right side, left side? Could it be coming from the cowl area? Does the pitch change? My cd player makes a reacket when attempting to eject sometimes - could that be it? Dunno - reaching.
Do you have an OE navigation system?
If so, there is a speed warning, sounds like a "fasten seat belt" on an airline. You would find this in the setup menu. The default is 1 - 5 mph.
SOLVED.... for those of you never having taken your mini up 95 miles an hour my 06 MCS has a speed warning...... yes I said speed warning, Im guessing i could have it disabled by a dealer as a programmable feature. BUT I acceled to 95 heard it slowed and it stopped acceled to 95 and heard it, slowed and it stopped AND 1 more time...... three is the magic number....... Dont know when or what years have it but mine does...its very soft and subtle, but if all you are hearing is your engine and wind you are cutting thru ....its there to warn you ..AS IF I DIDNT KNOW I WAS DOING 95..... MY HEADS UP GPS DISPLAY AND MY SPEEDO are right there!!!!! freakin hilarious (speedo is off by 3/4 MPH due to the 205/45/r16's im running on my 7.5 drags...15mm lower)
see below...... 95mph speed warning for 10 to 15 seconds then stops, or if you decel. tested it 3 times to 95 then to 90 and ecvery time is sounds at 95.....it soft and subtle but you hear it.....wired....might be a US market thing
Yes Nav package ..never use it its a dinosaur but the computer is always up I have a doube din touch screen in single din package that the screen slides out and pops up verticle, blocks my gas gauge and bottom edge of the nav screen bout a 1/2 inch, but the touch has NAV with upgradable maps and Screen Mirroring from my phone..
Total infotainment system... thanks for all the suggestions but i just figured it out on my way home tonight..... probably shouldnt be in such a hurry huh...... LOL..... such a fun car,,,, sometimes i literally am grinning and gigging....... love to make the SC ssscccrreeaaammmmm.... buying a 15% tonight with belt and plugs...... Tuner is in the mail...... and all supporting mods are done (CAI, aftermkt Intercooler, One Ball Mod. CHEERS
So I can adjust the speed at which the warning sounds in the OBD operational tests and menus? Which one is it ..ive used rthe RESET ECU, REALTIME COOLANT TEMP READOUT, Guage reset but there are alot of menu items ive never used, I Know there is a listing here somewhere of all selection items and menus ... ill look it up... thanks for the 411
A few other mysterious beeping threads, but not much, the above sounds plausible in regard to being associated with factory nav unit...
...does your car have the navigation package?
If so, maybe it needs some sort of reset?
So is there an adjustment in the OBD menu or is it a dealer programmed option that I need to have them do, cause I have a little list of settings i want adjusted. like auto window down on push and hold or key turn and hold (they go up but not down) and the annoying key in ignition chime. THanks for your info, im learning lots of little snippets lately, all great stuff....... r53 is the funnest car ive ever driven Aisin Automatic with paddles and sport auto is awesome. at 55 i just didnt want a manual ...too much work, But i get the best of both worlds with this tranney from shifting all 6 manually to auto sport mode which runs each gear into the higher rpm before shifiting is really very intuitive and learns the dirvers tendencies really well ( almost paranormally well lol)
