Stock Problems/IssuesDiscussions related to warranty related issues and repairs, or other problems with the OEM parts and software for MINI Cooper (R50), Cabrio (R52), and Cooper S (R53) MINIs.
Been chasing a misfire issue for the past few days. 2006 MCS pretty much stock with about 105k on her. Started it up and drove half a mile then started running terrible. got 4 codes. Note that I have been driving with the 2096 code prior to this issue (but maybe it's the root cause?)
I started by swapping the spark plugs wires. No change. next I swapped the injectors around. moved #4 to #3 hoping the code would follow the injector. Still got the #4 misfire code. I also put all new o ring's on the injectors since I lost one.
Lastly I did a compression test. Rented one from the auto parts store. Each cylinder shows 130psi. Low, but consistent, based on my research. I also topped off the oil since it was a little low. Ran it a bit but still runs awful. Idle is really bad so I can't even drive it.
Looking for some advice on what to check next... Coil pack? Leak down? Swap plugs?
Since the code remained on cylinder 4 after you moved the injector and spark plug wires, your next logical step would be to replace the coil or coil pack whichever is germane to your Mini.
Possible broken valve spring....did you clear the codes after swapping parts around?
Did you actually swap plugs around, or just the wires? Maybe cracked plug?
Since #3 & #4 are next to each other in the firing order, 1-3-4-2, I would swap parts with #1 cylinder to get a possible better reading from the scanner
(do not get a MSD coil pac, stay with OE....the original coil pack has been proven the best)

I did clear the code and it popped right back up. I did not move plugs. just wires. inspected the pugs when I pulled them for compression test.
I thought the MSD coil pack would be a good upgrade based on my research, it seems not though?
Thanks all for the help. It was indeed a bad coil. Swapped that, spark plugs, wires, and put on a 15% for good measure. Runs great but still can't clear the codes....I read on another thread you gotta use a scanner such as a NT510. Can anyone attest to that? I just have a cheapo bluetooth adapter now, and it won't clear the codes.
