Rough start on cold starts

So when I start my car it starts and dies about 3 times on a cold start. But when it final starts up it runs really rough for about 5 minutes then it’s fine. What could it be????

sounds like a fuel pump. Start by checking that using a mini compatable scanner, and see what kinda pressure your getting at both Lpfp and Hpfp.... If you dont have one, put key in the car, and you should hear the two pumps, one at the rear in the tank, and one on the left side of the engine (cars left not yours when looking at it.

When I first start my '02, I turn the ignition on, wait a couple of seconds for the pump to stop humming & it starts up just fine.
I did the same thing years ago when I had classic Minis.
You might also check the spark plugs - MINIs tend to run rich & a good wire-brushing will help.

Have you considered O2 sensors or other AFR control components?

check the PVC pipe on the back of the valve cover, known to split on minis! its a cheap fix and something you can do yourself.
