A spongy clutch pedal or long pedal travel sounds like symptoms of the slave cylinder going out....the input slave at firewall can be a PITA to replace and bleed.
I believe mine was replaced around 110k miles.

Just for the heck of it, since (output slave ) is dry, check the level of the brake fluid reservoir.

The brake fluid reservoir serves the purpose of both hydraulic brakes and the clutch. The two bottom connections off the brake fluid reservoir are for the brake system...the plastic one ABOVE those two are for the clutch....Unfortunately when the fluid gets low past the feeder tube for the clutch it will get air into the system making for spongy clutch pedal.

If thats the case, you will need to top off with DOT 4, and bleed the output slave where that photo is. It can be a PITA and tougher to do while its attached to the car as the output slave itself can and will harbor air and impossible to bleed until its completely compressed. The make a tool to keep it compressed, most DIY guys just make one out of a piece of wood and two nuts/long bolts, or 6-8 inches of plumbers strap and the aforementioned hardware. Will need someone inside the car to lightly press clutch while your bleeding system too.

Check you tube for any DIY steps for it....should be plenty in there.
