Loose headliner - what to do?

Basically, there is a layer of foam between the fabric and the shell that is failing. The new fabric comes with the foam attached and so you need to reupholster it. I do my own and it's not that hard, but have not done one in a MINI yet, so I can't tell you the specifics. It is a common problem and they fail in 5 to 15 years depending on where you live and how hot it is.

Clean the old one off and replace it. I have done it on BMWs before its a pain to clean off the old stuff, not to hard to roll out and glue the new fabric. New fabric is pretty thick and foamy a little from those universal headliner shops.
Or upgrade to the anthracite factory headliner : https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...o-sunroof.html

At this point you’re going to want to replace it. I prefer to have the headliner board out of the car and strip it, get it completely clean. Then use 3M 74 clear (personal preference over orange) spray adhesive on both the material and the board in consistent coats. I like to work with the headliner board facing up on table, having two people is handy if this is your first one.
