Headliner (?) cloth loose

Dumb question... I am not sure if this has ever happened to anyone else. I tried searching the forum but couldn't find anything related to my issue.

I am not sure what the cloth that covers the interior top is called (headliner?). Anyway, said cloth decided to come loose, at first just at the edge of the windshield on the driver side and the foam that's under it seems to be all crumbly and falling off too. During the last week it seemed to be getting worse as the part that is loose is now about an inch wide and going from the driver's side all the way to the rear view mirror. I am wondering how I could "glue" that back on? Should I glue it back on? I don't want it to come even more loose and I don't want to do a whole interior make-over.

i had the same problem about a month ago. took it to 2 reupholstering shops and they said that it can be glued back in place but will probably sag again because the material won't stick as well as it did before. so i just had my whole headliner replaced

I was afraid of that as nothing would really stick to the foam. If you don't mind me asking how much did it cost you to have the whole headliner replaced? Also I have a sunroof, which might make the whole process a bit more tedious (read expensive) I can only assume.

i'm not from the U.S. but if converted to dollars, the whole job cost me $135. i also have the sunroof. can't imagine it being less expensive for a MINI without a sunroof because they will still cut the same amount of material (length x width) to cover the whole area of the headliner

I recently glued mine back up (it was falling much like you described). I brushed the dried, crumbled foam out of the way first using a thin, disposable natural-bristle paint brush (clean and dry, of course).

I then glued the material back up, sans foam, with contact cement. I don't see it falling back down, because there's no foam in the bond any more.

check your yellow pages for automotive upholstery shops

this is a common repair and most will give a free estimate

this is a job that can go bad fast if you don't know what you are doing .. easy to make a real mess. But an experienced had can knock it off quickly and it looks right.

Thanks guys. I'll check with local upholstery shops. See what they have to say.
