Help! Mini cooper s cranks but no start

So i have a 2007 mini cooper s turbo. It cranks but won't start. Checked the plugs/coils and they're not sparking. Replaced to cam and crank position sensor, and the coils and it made no difference. Spark plugs are a bit black but other than that they seem fine. What else can it be? Tried using some starter fluid and got it to try to start (engine sounded like it was gonna start for half a second) but after that nothing. I'm confused as to what else it can be. Any helps/thoughts?

This is the symptom of a bad HPFP. An '07 probably had it replaced already, but also probably long ago and the replacement is now failing --- they're only good for 50K miles or so.

a bad hpfp can cause no spark? After cranking the engine i pulled out the plugs and they look wet and smell like gasoline, so i know it's getting fuel.

Check the spark plugs coil packs ground wires. It is the ligh green screw with the valve cover bolts.

Also, you could take the valve cover out to inspect the chain condition and timing.

Already have done that. Haven't checked it in depth, but the chain itself looks fine, no metal shavings anywhere. How can i tell if the timing is off? Any noises to listen for?

With the cover off, rotate the engine clockwise and look for the writing on both cams to face up. Then place two long straws in cyl 1 and 2. They have to be levelled. Also use an 1.5" screw to at least make sure you can lock the crankshaft.

the other thing is probably grounding as i mentioned before. If that wire isn't making a good contact, the car wont start.

Just for grins, check the battery. I have heard that while it may have enough energy to crank, the software sees a value that is too low and will not allow spark. If you have already tried that, ignore the suggestion. Good luck.
