CEL won't go off, codes cleared
Hi, a few weeks ago my 08 Minci Cooper S started running rough and CEL came on. OBD reader told me it needed ignition coils. I replaced coils and the car now runs great. I erased the codes but the CEL remains on. I disconnected the battery for 5 hours but the CEL remains on. How can I turn off the CEL? Thank you for any advice.

I had a similar problem last week. Car started running rough after a tankful of Walmart gas and threw a CEL. I burned off the tank of gas and cleared the code using my P3 gauge but would immediately come back on. It wasn't until I made it home that I discovered it had thrown multiple codes by using Carly. After clearing all codes, CEL is out. My guess is that some standard OBD readers can't clear the BMW specific codes while Carly and some others can.

What OBD reader are you using? My $15 ebay one wouldn't clear any codes, so I bought a $50 actron and that would clear the CEL on the speedo but wouldn't clear the 1/2 engine yellow light on the tach, so I bought the Foxwell NT510 and that clears all codes, best scanner I have ever used.

Definitely upgrade for this car. The mini has been the most fickle car re: OBD scanner I have owned. Give the foxwell a look, you can download additional software for other car makes. The foxwell even resets my Cayenne service light that only the dealer can supposedly do.

Sorry it took me so long to thank you, but THANK YOU!! This totally worked, when nothing else would.
