Coolant Question

Yesterday our 2006 Mini Cooper S Convertible started to overheat sitting in traffic. My wife pulled over and let it cool, started it and went a couple of blocks and the gauge climbed again so she pulled over. She then noticed the carpet on the drivers side was saturated with coolant. She let it sit, walked and got some coolant and when I got there we checked the overflow tank and it was empty. We decided to not drive it home (she was almost an hour from home) and we will go pick it up today. Wondering if the coolant on the floorboard on the drivers side will help us figure out what is the most likely area for the leak. Thanks for your input!

Either a connection to or the core itself.
