Newbie - justa with 1/2 engine light, now dead battery

Hi everyone.
I'm going to just jump right in and ask. So I have a 2011 base model mini. I have had it fur several years now and have had no issues with it until recently. So I was heading to work and was climbing a hill on the hwy and on the display an engine emblem popped up and half of it was solid and the other half not.so I turned around and brought it back home.as soon as I turned around and headed back down hill the emblem went away and it seemed normal. So I pull into driveway and shut my car off and the fan continued to run for 5 or so minutes. I checked all fluids and I was a little over quart of water but oil was fine.I. have had it parked since because I did not want to damage it anymore. I went out to start it and the battery was dead. It cranked over a few times and the fan kicked on and drained the battery rest of the way. Can you tell me if I need a relay, sensor, or fan assembly?

Please provide some basic information:
Model - R56?
How many miles?
When and what was the last maintenance done on the car?
Have you tried jump starting the car?
Any spots or puddles of fluid underneath?

Get it jumpstarted and head to a local auto parts store to get the battery checked and the codes read. Then post the information here. If you still have the original battery then it probably needs a new one. The 1/2 engine light could be due to low coolant, or some other problem, can't tell without the trouble codes.

If the battery is near end of life, it will do all sorts of weird stuff. I'm on my 3rd with my 2009 and both times the last 2 went, my instrument cluster decided to have a seizure of alarms. Door locks, radio, turn signals didn't work, etc...

If it's original, it's probably due for replacement. If the store said it was good, did they load test it? A simple voltage test could still indicate good when it's not.

yes it is an r56. It has 126000 miles on it. I have had it jumped the other day, it ran fine then when I shut it off the fan ran on high and drained battery again. No drips underneath it. I had the oils changed around one month prior to this and full synthetic was used. I have not had the fob read yet. Never have had an issue with it until this. Does burn a bit of oil Over time.but doesn't leak. I'm pretty sure this is the original battery. So this could possibly be a battery issue? Thank you for you help

My initial suspicion is a combination of an old battery and a bad temperature sensor.

Get the codes read - this is via the OBD2 connector under the dash, not the keyfob. The diagnostic codes should show what the problem is.

So Welcome to the forum Wendi

Thank you guys for all the help. And the welcome to club. I have a friend who is going to bring over his code reader to figure it out. I will buy a new battery because I had noticed in the prior months that it did not seem as strong of turnover when started. I was leaning towards a relay or sensor because of fan coming on without even turning car on. I will let you know the outcome, because I'm missing my mini.

problem fixed. Thank you guys. It was what you guys suspected it was a temp sensor. Replaced that and put in a new battery and she is back to herself. Just wanted to come and thank you. I am sure if more issues arise I will ask for help here.
