R53 new owner possible chain rattle

As you see no signs of wear by oil pump

Rails looks fine

Here I noticed timing marks on chain they’re not on the sprocket marks they’re far away so car runs fine without any issues but not sure why the rattle on cold start wondering if the chain is just stretched
Hi everyone I just recently bought our 2004 Mini R53
we love it

but kinda have a problem with a possible timing chain stretched
I replaced the timing chain tensioner but rattle still there on cold start
any help here we so appreciated

Going to move you to the Stock Problems/Issues section.

First, the marks on the sprockets (crank and cam) will only line up with the chain marks every so many chain rotations. Remember that there are more links in the chain than there are teeth on the sprockets. Could be either four or six revolutions.

Second, how many miles on the car?

Third, welcome to NAM.

Thanks for get back to me

The Mini has 150000 on the clock now
we bought it last year summer time and i guess we didn’t notice the rattle till now the we move the car from storage

btw thank you
i do have a few clips of the noise and I did remove the valve cover too and not sure if the chain should have a bit of movement to the sides not slacking just some movement side to side if that make sense
I just uploaded on YouTube not sure how to put the link here lol
new on this also

That tappings do not sound like timing chain rattle or slapping to me. Sounds like hydraulic lifter or questionable valve.

I suggest you try using a length of PVC hose as an acoustic stethoscope. It can be very effective in homing in to the source of the tapping sound. The hose make what you can hear very directional. Aim the hose at each of the four cylinders at the valve cover. You should be able to hear the relative highs and lows of tapping. If they sound roughly the same the noise may come from the low end of the engine. Cylinder head / valve or lifter are much cheaper than low end problems.

Good luck.
